Manatees' deaths in Lee County caused by cold stress: FWC Florida wildlife officials believe several manatees who died in Lee County this week may have died due to cold stress related to the recent cold weather.
Approximately 25 manatees were found dead between Feb. 13 and Feb. 18, NBC affiliate WBBH in Fort Myers reported.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a statement Friday that the recent and unplanned shutdown of a Florida Power & Light power plant may have impacted mortality levels.
"Historically, each winter there is an increase in manatee mortalities and rescues statewide due to cold stress," FWC said. "Manatees need access to water that is warmer than 68°F to survive prolonged cold weather. As temperatures drop, Florida manatees move into springs, power plant discharge areas and other warm-water areas."..........
