9 California skiers still missing after avalanche; 6 rescued
Emergency beacons helped rescuers locate six survivors near Lake Tahoe as powerful winter storm slams California

Six backcountry skiers survived an avalanche during a fierce snowstorm near Lake Tahoe in Northern California, but nine others from their group remain missing in treacherous mountain conditions.

Two of the rescued skiers were hospitalized for treatment, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. Officials clarified Tuesday night that the tour group consisted of 15 skiers, not 16 as initially reported.

The avalanche struck Tuesday near Frog Lake in the Castle Peak area, northwest of Lake Tahoe, prompting a 911 call reporting multiple people buried. Rescue teams navigated rugged terrain and treacherous conditions for several hours before reaching the survivors.

The skiers were on the final day of a three-day backcountry tour organized by Blackbird Mountain Guides, officials told The Associated Press. The expedition required traversing up to four miles of mountainous terrain while carrying food and supplies and staying overnight in remote huts.

Authorities said emergency beacons carried by the group helped pinpoint their location. Rescuers approached cautiously amid the risk of additional avalanches.

The incident comes as a powerful winter storm slams California, dumping heavy snow and bringing high winds across the Sierra Nevada. Avalanche warnings were issued across the region, with forecasters warning of large slides through Wednesday.

8 skiers found dead, 1 missing after massive Lake Tahoe avalanche
Sheriff Shannan Moon announced the heartbreaking transition from a rescue to a recovery mission

Eight skiers who went missing this week after an avalanche near Lake Tahoe in California have been found dead and one is still missing, authorities said Wednesday.

Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon said during a news conference that authorities have told the families the mission has moved from rescue to recovery.

"They were on their way back to camp when the avalanche actually hit," Moon said. "It took these search and rescue crews hours just to find those first few survivors that we're talking."

The avalanche is the deadliest in the U.S. since 1981, when 11 climbers were killed on Mount Rainier, Washington.

Six survivors were found Tuesday night buried in the snow, Moon said, who described the weather conditions as "extreme."

"I would say is an understatement. Lots of snow, gale force winds, winds, making it impossible to see," she said.

The skiers were on a three-day trek in Northern California’s Sierra Nevada as a winter storm pummeled the West Coast. The six survivors used equipment to shelter themselves and were trying to stay warm while waiting to be rescued, Moon said.

Back country skiing especially during blizzard conditions is a profoundly stupid thing to do.

Sorry to say about the missing skiers but they're dead by now and any rescue attempt should wait for better weather so searchers are not added to the death toll.

*nothing* scarier than stepping out of the trees into an avalanche chute. All your hair goes to wire. Spooky.

I make it a point to stay away from such things... No need to be up there in such conditions, just stay in the bottom, well away from the sides.

I believe one FOX reporter stated there were avalanche warnings in place at the time. Did the guides not know, or did they think they could ride it out, I wonder?

Maybe coming in on a high line and had to cross a chute.

It's weird deal all around... 6 survived and threw a camp, and didn't search for the ones still buried? That is against every law of back country survival, right there. You turn your tent poles into probes and find those folks, and you don't stop until you do.

Must have been day-trippers... But that makes no sense being out there at all in blizzard conditions.

Rant #1 -

How do you stop people doing things that are stupid but not illegal?

This area is forecast to get 5 FEET of snow FFS!! They couldn't wait a week??

"Extreme sports" are not "cool" or "daring", they're stupid and selfish.

You put yourself in unnecessary danger, worry friends and family, all for - IF everything works out correctly - a few fleeting moments of thrill.

But because they're, by nature, "extreme", there's a good chance things can go horribly wrong ... you could be injured, maimed, killed, maybe not even found ... and all your shattered friends, family, and pets are left to pick up the pieces.

All for a few moments of thrill ... is it really worth it??

Should we all just work in cubicle farms in cities then?

I have been out in it. As deep and as cold as Calgary has to give. I worked in it, and I played in it. And I have come draggin back home all busted up, and had to walk out besides.

I wouldn't be concerned by that storm. I'd just dig in and wait it out. I would have the possibles with me regardless of the weather. And I wouldn't be anywhere that trees don't grow - You can bet on that.

This is either professionals getting caught out, or more likely, folks that were unwise, and unprepared. The bush is a cruel mistress. You get out of line, you die.

But you are taking your life in your hands every time you go speeding home at 70 mph... far more than I ever did walking off into the wild with guns and knives and hatchets, and bears and wolves... You are so acclimatized to it that you don't even know... Until a fateful day comes along, and you have a split second of realization... And then you'll be off to meet your Maker.

Oh HELL yes! To sit atop a mountain with a thundering maelstrom all around you... Lightning crackling, punching into the rock every few seconds... You won't know God like you will right then.

Now... If you're dumb, you'll be standing out in it being a lightning rod. If you're smart, you'll be tucked into a cave, watching the show... But man! is it a sight to see. No movie comes anywhere near close!

NEW YORK — A 21-year-old woman from Brick died after slipping from a mountain trail while hiking in the Adirondacks, according to New York State authorities.

Brianna L. Mohr was trekking near the summit of Mount Marcy on February 12 when she lost her footing and slid off the trail, officials said. She had been hiking with her dog, which was later found unharmed and safely recovered.

Mohr contacted emergency dispatchers at approximately 3:05 p.m. to report the fall, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said. Forest rangers deployed by snowmobile and a tracked utility vehicle while the New York State Police launched an aerial search.

Cloud cover hampered visibility from the air, prompting rescuers to lower a ranger near the Marcy Dam Outpost to continue the search on foot. The ranger located Mohr at 9:51 p.m., but deteriorating weather conditions prevented recovery efforts until the following morning.

An autopsy conducted Saturday determined the cause of death to be hypothermia, State Police said.

Rising 5,341 feet, Mount Marcy is the tallest peak in New York and sits within the High Peaks Wilderness Area of Adirondack Park. Authorities routinely caution hikers about rapidly changing weather and hazardous winter trail conditions in the region.

Mohr’s brother, Ryan, shared a public tribute on social media remembering his sister as his closest friend and a lasting source of inspiration. He reflected on their shared memories — from music sessions to late-night food runs — and described her as “the coolest person” he knew.

Officials continue to remind hikers to prepare for severe weather, carry proper equipment and monitor conditions closely when venturing into the High Peaks.

Poster's comment:
Sorry for the girl, but where was her common sense to be out there alone in temps and conditions like that?

Feel sorry for the dog... hope he finds a good home.
