Some Louisville leaders are voicing their concerns after a judge reduced a jury's recommended sentence for a man found guilty of violent crimes.

“I really do have some serious concerns, and I'm extremely disappointed about the decision that Judge Davis made,” said Councilman Anthony Piagentini.

Christopher Thompson was found guilty in December of kidnapping, sodomy, robbery, and sexual abuse. Following the verdict, the jury recommended a 65-year prison sentence. The Commonwealth’s Attorney said that the recommendation was “most appropriate,” citing Thompson’s actions and what prosecutors described as inappropriate outbursts in court.

Judge Tracy Davis ultimately sentenced Thompson to 30 years, explaining that she did not believe he was beyond rehabilitation.

“It’s unfortunate, but Mr. Thompson never actually got the opportunity to get any type of treatment, whether that be mental health treatment, whether that be anger management,” Davis said. “Unfortunately, he fell through the cracks and ended up before this court as an 18 or 19-year-old.”

Piagentini said the outcome raises questions for victims and the broader community.

Thompson’s charges stem from an incident in July 2023. Police say Thompson pointed a gun at a woman, drove her to a nearby elementary school, and sexually assaulted her. Investigators say he later drove her to an ATM, forced her to withdraw money, and sexually assaulted her again.

“This man was sentenced now to 30 years. Who believes that she will only be victimized for 30 years?” Piagentini said. “I’m sure that this has changed her life literally forever. That her relationships and her mental state will never be the same.”

Thompson also has a criminal history, according to court records. In 2023, he was charged with fleeing or evading police, receiving stolen property, and using restricted ammunition. Records also indicate that last year, he was captured on an LMDC camera physically assaulting an officer.

Went good.  He want's this judge and all of the judges sentencing histories made public.  Especially Judge Davis.  40 of 44 cases she's ruled on she's given shock probation.  That's 91% of her cases.

The state average for judges is 42%

I'll have a story on this here shortly with Piagentini's thoughts.

@Polly Ticks

Here ya go LOL!

LOUISVILLE, KY - A Metro Council member is raising concerns after a violent felon's sentence is cut in half by the judge...John Shannon has the details...

Christopher Thompson was found guilty of kidnapping, sodomy, robbery, and sexual abuse...the jury sentenced him to 65 years...the Commonwealth's attorney said the sentence was “most appropriate”...Judge Tracy Davis disagreed and cut Thompson's sentence to 30 years with eligibility for parole in 20...her reasoning...she didn't believe he was beyond rehabilitation...this isn't sitting well with Councilman Anthony Piagentini...

Soundbite Councilman Anthony Piagentini - "Even if that's true, you have to deal with today's reality. The reality is he is a sick, sociopathic, violent sexual predator that if he gets out into the public, I—I believe—would do it again."

Piagentini is calling for the decisions of the Jefferson County judges to be made public in the name of transparency so the public can see how the judges are ruling on felony cases...

Probably my fault for the misunderstanding - I eventually gave up even trying to get my brain to work through today's migraine.

Thanks for posting the story here, in any case. I hope Piagentini's idea gets some legs.
