Team USA Olympic Skiers ‘Heartbroken,’ Say They Don’t Represent ICE Operations by Wearing American Flag

Freestyle skiers for Team USA at the Winter Olympics spoke out against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), saying they were “heartbroken” over what was happening.

While speaking at a press conference, Chris Lillis and Hunter Hess attempted to distance themselves from ICE. They clarified that while they support their country, they don’t “represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.,” according to Reuters.

“I feel heartbroken about what’s happened in the United States ….. I’m pretty sure you’re referencing ICE, and some of the protests and things like that,” Lillis stated.

Lillis added that he felt like the United States needs “to focus on respecting everybody’s rights and making sure that we’re treating our citizens as well as anybody with love and respect.”

Hess also expressed that it was “a little hard” for him to “wear Team USA gear” as there was “a lot going on that” he isn’t “the biggest fan of.”

“Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.,” Hess added.

It's classless to use that setting to promote one's own political views. If asked, do like the tennis players did with the obnoxious reporter at the Australian Open, and respond that this event is about sport, not politics - and refuse to answer. If not asked, then don't bring it up like a petulant child.

The whole point of the Olympics is that it should not be political...but over the years that has changed.

The US Olympic Committee should have screened these *athletes* or at least told them no political statements lest we will send you home...

I was really looking forward to watching figure skating...now not so much.

I really wasn't interested in her anyway. The skaters are too high-strung or, in the case of the males, too effeminate. Used to be a big fan of downhill and giant slalom skiing, but at this point, I'd rather watch a documentary about engineering catastrophes or veterinarians.  :silly:

Feeling heat at the winter Olympics, a Team USA skier started singing a new tune about his “mixed emotions” representing his country, even as other athletes held firm to slamming their homeland.

Athletes getting political is hardly a new phenomenon, but recent remarks stepped beyond mere virtue signaling to find some distancing themselves from the Old Glory sewn onto their sleeve. Having been deemed a “Loser” by President Donald Trump, skier Hunter Hess chose to walk back his divisive commentary Monday, insisting on social media that he “cannot wait to represent Team USA.”

“I love my country,” wrote Hess on Instagram. “There is so much that is great about America, but there are always things that could be better. One of the many things that makes this country so amazing is that we have the right and the freedom to point that out. The best part of the Olympics is that it brings people together, and when so many of us are divided, we need that more than ever.”

“I cannot wait to represent Team USA next week when I compete. Thanks to everyone for their support,” he added.
