Mamdani set to tax the rich until they scream as NYC looks to plug mammoth budget hole
January 29, 2026 | Chris Donaldson

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is calling for a tax hike on the wealthy and corporations as Gotham faces a mammoth budget deficit of more than $12 billion now that he has settled into City Hall.

“We are speaking about a fiscal crisis at a scale greater than the Great Recession,” Hizzoner said at a Wednesday press conference. “And so there will not be one single thing that can answer that crisis. It will require us to pursue every single avenue.”

“That means looking inward into savings and efficiencies,” he continued. “That also means raising taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and the most profitable corporations, and it means recalibrating the relationship with the state.”

It's the fault of the rich for still being domiciled in NYC.

The unwashed masses have given up on Dem Party, GOP, and private market capitalism.  You could see this Kommie Krazy Train coming from a mile away.

It's all in how he defines "wealthy." Joe Schmoe New Yorker, making $100K per year, is going to get screwed, too.

Yup.  But those of us who just work in NYC but live outside it won’t get hit with this tax.  NYC is not allowed to tax commuters!

Tax the rich.  Feed the poor.
Until there are no rich no more.

Hochul, being nothing more than another female party apparatchik, will knuckle under to zombie-mammie's demands. She has no idea how to fight back against a muslim male -- who probably has no respect for her as governor in any case.

Dude’s been in office a month, and he’s already run out of other people’s money.

Raiding retiree benefit funds?

That won't work well for the underlings.

Is that true?

I worked in NY state and lived in CT and had to pay NY state taxes for the earnings I made in the state.

NY city can't tax someone commuting to work from within NY state but living outside the city.

Ok, different than someone working in NY state and living in another state.

But I wonder why they can't change that to include any who work in the city?  What's preventing a change?

NYC public school teachers voted overwhelmingly for Mamdani.
The United Federation of Teachers, representing NYC public school teachers, endorsed Mamdani, with 64% of delegates voting for him.
He’s now raiding their pension fund.

Mayor Mamdani has ~$300 billion in NYC employee pension funds to raid for the "free buses", "govt grocery stores", "community housing", and "illegal alien welfare" over the next four years.
NYC unions who supported Mamdani, your pension funds are the "billionaires" he was talking about.

Probably because income taxes at the state level are on the state's tax forms/laws and the city has no authority to carve out city level income tax on those state level forms.

I looked this up and don't know if this is legit but it does not agree with your statement that a NYC non-resident does not have to pay NYC income taxes while working in the city.

In fact, it declares if your office is in NYC, you must pay NYC income tax even if you live outside NYC and work out of your home.

Those that can will move out and companies that can will fold up shop and find somewhere else to do business. NYC will become desolate, and left with people who are solely reliant on freebies.

It's a shame.  So much history in NYC and NY used to be a really beautiful state; especially up state NY.
Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

  • RUSSIA MUST BE DESTROYED!!!
Different sources have different takes but what I've seen so far is:

1. NYC property taxes will rise by 9.5% over last year.
2. NYC property taxes will rise to 9.5%
3. Current NYC property tax rates of x% will rise an additional 9.5%

Texas Stock Exchange, there she grows.

New Yorkers should have figured this out when native New Yorker billionaire DT left the state years ago.
