Schumer, Trump working on deal to avoid government shutdown
by Alexander Bolton - 01/29/26 8:43 AM ET

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and President Trump are moving toward a deal to separate Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding from five other House-passed appropriations bills in hopes of avoiding a partial government shutdown this weekend, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

No agreement has been reached yet but the discussions are ongoing and moving in the Democrats’ direction, according to the source.

Schumer and Senate Democrats are demanding that the pending DHS funding bill be pulled out of the six-bill appropriations package, which the upper chamber is scheduled to vote on Thursday.

The Democratic leader wants to pass a short-term extension of funding for the agency to give Congress time to negotiate and pass legislation to overhaul Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to “rein in ICE and the violence.”

“This is not border security, this is not law and order, this is chaos — created at the top and felt in so many of our neighborhoods,” Schumer said at a press conference Wednesday.

The New York senator has laid out three major demands for reforming ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies working on immigration enforcement.

Excerpt:
The government funding deadline is looming, and the atmosphere in Washington has been tense ever since the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis sent leftists into a frenzy and Democrats scrambling for ways to kneecap the Department of Homeland Security. The latest reports indicate President Trump and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are moving toward an agreement that would prevent a shutdown early Saturday when funding for multiple agencies lapses. Under the emerging plan, the Senate would split off DHS funding from a six-bill package of spending measures needed to keep the military, health programs, and other agencies running through September. The bulk of those bills would pass before Friday’s midnight deadline, while a short-term stopgap extension would be passed for homeland security operations—buying time for negotiations on a new DHS spending bill. That new bill would include fresh restrictions Democrats have demanded on immigration enforcement tactics and accountability measures for officers accused of excessive force.

Democrats know their unhinged and violent base will go after law enforcement they can identify.

GOP senators now open to splitting out DHS funding in major cave to Schumer, Dems
January 29, 2026 | Chris Donaldson |

As the clock ticks down to the second government shutdown in three months, there are now signs that Senate Republicans are going to crumble, agreeing to strip a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from a larger package in what would be a major surrender to Democrats.

Even though Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said he is against separating the bills to appease Democrats who are using outrage over the shooting of left-wing agitator Alex Pretti as leverage, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) acknowledged that “a bunch” of Republicans are willing to bow to the minority party’s demands by setting aside DHS funding to move the other bills funding Defense and other government agencies for the rest of the fiscal year.

“Sen. Thune can’t admit it because he’s got to act like a tough guy and the White House is negotiating, and all of that, but most of you have been around here for a while, and most of us have seen this vampire movie before,” Kennedy told reporters on Wednesday, according to The Hill.

“I think the Democrats don’t want to vote for a Homeland Security bill,” he said. “If that’s the case, then what are our choices? To throw out all the bills? Or one?”

“I think a rational person would say let’s pass what we can and work on the others,” added Kennedy, a conservative favorite for his endless series of homespun quips.

Schumer Reveals What Democrats Want In Order To Back Off Forcing Another Shutdown

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday three demands he said would be essential to securing Democrats’ support for a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill that must pass before the end of Friday to avoid a partial government shutdown.

Schumer outlined the three reforms he wanted made to the department, telling reporters that these demands were “common-sense and necessary policy goals” his caucus is “united” on. The reforms involved some new requests — such as requiring agents to remove their masks — as well as enforcing body camera usage, which is a policy the House already appropriated funds for in the DHS funding bill the lower chamber passed Jan. 22.

Schumer first called to end roving patrols — operations where officers drive through neighborhoods — and to tighten requirements for agents to obtain warrants before entering homes.
He also called to “enforce accountability by establishing a universal code of conduct governing federal law enforcement officers’ use of force.”

Schumer’s final demand was to “prohibit federal officers from wearing masks and require them to wear body cameras and proper identification.” Democrats have previously called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to stop wearing masks throughout 2025.

Unfortunately true!  They are despicable, untrustworthy and will be defeated in the mid terms.

Good, let them Dems explain to voters why and for whom they are shutting down Our Government - criminal illegal alien foreigners - not veterans, not workers, not retirees, not American children.

Make the Dems explain that they are shutting down Our Government so 10 - 20 million foreign criminal illegal alien cheaters can cut the line ahead of law-abiding American citizens.

Yes, Dems, explain to the American people why a special class of 10 - 20 million criminal illegal alien foreigners deserve more consideration than the remaining 300+ million Ameican citizens and legal residents.

It is not the job of the American taxpayer to pay for the housing, education, healthcare, food, utilities, etc., of criminal illegal alien foreigners.

Shutting the government down over something the shutdown doesn't even affect (CBP/ICE are funded for the next four years) is peak Washington.

It gets no more Washington than that.

Why 7 GOP senators voted against bill to keep government open past Friday
by Alexander Bolton - 01/29/26 2:14 PM ET

Seven Republican senators on Thursday voted against advancing a six-bill funding package to keep the government open past Friday, citing concerns about the ballooning federal deficit and what they saw as the failure of the so-called appropriations minibus to significantly cut spending

Sens. Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Ashley Moody (R-Fla.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) voted against a motion to advance the bill, even though it had the strong support of Senate GOP leaders.

The package, which was blocked on a 45-55 vote, would have failed regardless of how the Republicans voted. It needed 60 votes to advance and did not pick up any Democratic support.

Paul said his opposition to the package was driven by “a general complaint about how much government spends.”

“Most of the spending levels have come back either at last year’s level or above. Last year we had a deficit of about $1.8 [trillion], $1.9 trillion. If you vote for these levels, it’s sort of a belief that you think what we’re spending is OK,” he said.

“I think what we’re spending is too much,” he added.

Scott said he opposes Democratic demands to pull funding for the Department of Homeland Security out of the funding package after Democrats negotiated a variety of spending victories for their own side.

He also pointed to what he called wasteful spending in the package.

“I don’t like the bill. I don’t like the six-bill package because it doesn’t balance the budget and it’s got all this wasteful spending through all these earmarks,” he said.

“Now, they’re talking about proceeding to cut out the ICE portion of the funding. I don’t support that, I support ICE. I think it’s crazy that at the last minute Democrats think they can dictate and shut down the [Homeland Security] funding,” Scott said, using an abbreviation for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“They want all their wasteful spending, they don’t want to balance the budget. Then they don’t want to fund the thing they caused. … They allowed all these criminals into our country and now ICE is doing their job, and [Democrats] don’t want to fund it,” he said.

Moody declined to say why she voted against the package, telling The Hill she didn’t have time to talk as she walked into a lunch meeting.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (S.D.) cast the eighth Republican vote against the bill, but he did so on purely procedural grounds. He cast a last-minute vote against the motion to end debate on proceeding to the bill so that he could enter a “motion to recommit” in order to have flexibility to bring it back to the floor quickly.

The only way a "deal" can be reached is if Trump caves to Schumer on ICE, and I don't see that happening.

"Spineless Morons..."

"despicable, untrustworthy and will be defeated in the mid terms."

Just a sampling of comments in this thread.
Folks, you're not wrong.

But my reply to such comments will be different:
The country (if it is to be preserved as it exists now) will not and cannot be saved under the current form of government, existing Constitution, and existing two-party system.

Something else (as yet unknown), and some other group of "partisans of the right" will have to take up that task.

I'll suggest a recent and very interesting novel by Kurt Schlichter:
"American Apocalypse - The Second American Civil War"
Available from the usual sources (it's on z-lib, too)...
