Trump, Iran, Israel, and American Conservatives
To conservatives who regarded President Donald Trump as the main defender against the leftist agenda including creeping Islamization, his recent actions with regard to Iran and Israel must surely be deeply disturbing.

To conservatives who regarded President Donald Trump as the main defender against the leftist agenda including creeping Islamization, his recent actions with regard to Iran and Israel must surely be deeply disturbing.
A brief review is in order.
Let us take Iran first. An unprecedented number of Iranians took to the streets in an attempt to overthrow the ayatollahs, while the President of the United States repeatedly urged them to keep demonstrating, saying “Help is on the way.” Then after thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, had been slaughtered, he announced that he had changed his mind, for the time being, on the strength of the regime’s promise to stop executing the protestors (for which he thanked the regime). The regime immediately denied having made such a promise. Trump did send warships and planes to the Middle East, giving the impression of a military buildup in preparation for an attack, but did not say he definitely would attack. As the days lengthen between threat and performance, the probability of the latter decreases. The latest is that Trump and his envoy Steve Witkoff think a “diplomatic solution” is possible, if the Iranians change their ways. Do they think they are speaking to nursery school children?
One could say, of course, that Trump had no obligation, a priori, to come to the aid of the protestors in Iran, any more than all the rest of the world’s leaders who simply chose to look away. But once he had promised aid, and many had relied on his promise and risked their lives, he did have an obligation.
