For more than four years, Russia has sought to grind its way across Ukraine by sending waves of men into enemy fire, betting that sheer numbers would overwhelm even the most determined defence.

It has been a strategy of brutality, wasted lives and minimal gains. About 1.3 million Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded since the invasion began, with an estimated 325,000 dead.

Yet the battlefield has changed, making a questionable tactic even less effective.

Drones scour the front line, exposing large troop formations almost immediately. Electronic warfare disrupts communications, and Ukraine has learnt to anticipate assault patterns.

The “meat grinder” approach is becoming obsolete – and Russia knows it. A quieter, harder-to-detect tactic, which Western analysts say could be more dangerous, is slowly taking its place.

Now Russian units are breaking into much smaller teams. They move on foot, often at night, with minimal radio contact, probing for gaps in Ukraine’s front line and slipping through unseen.

Teams are usually made up of two to four men, while other soldiers go out alone.  .  .  .

To be clear here, Russia isn't abandoning its 'meat-grinder' tactics.  It's that they're running out of soldiers.  Same tactics.  Fewer soldiers.

Long-range S-400 air defense systems have been spotted moving in Moscow, likely to protect the May 9 parade on Red Square.

The Yezh Telegram channel published photos of the equipment in transit.

This may indicate that additional air defense systems are being redeployed to the Russian capital to safeguard a key event for the regime amid intensified Ukrainian drone and missile strikes.

Meanwhile, several S-400 systems are already deployed at positions across Moscow, so it is not possible to determine with certainty whether the photos show additional systems being brought in or simply the relocation of units already on duty between positions.

As of spring 2026, Moscow is protected by two tightly layered rings of air defense, along with several additional positions within the city itself. According to OSINT estimates, about 130 air defense sites are deployed in and around the capital.

The core of Moscow’s air defense network consists of roughly 100 Pantsir-S1 missile-and-gun systems, supported by a smaller number of Tor systems, both designed to intercept drones and cruise missiles. These are reinforced by around 20 S-400 batteries, which are intended to counter both cruise and ballistic missile threats.  .  .  .

Vladimir Putin has withdrawn to living in bunkers where he operates "for weeks" amid fresh concerns about a potential coup, according to a report citing a Western intelligence agency.

Security measures have been dramatically heightened around the Kremlin dictator, who has reportedly fled his preferred palaces, fearing they could become targets of drone attacks by members of his own inner circle. The new assessment cites an unnamed Western intelligence agency and has been disclosed by the independent Russian news outlet Important Stories.

"Since the beginning of March 2026, the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin have been concerned about a leak of sensitive information and, at the same time, about the risk of a plot or coup attempt against the Russian president," the outlet reports. "In particular, he fears the use of drones for a possible assassination attempt by members of the Russian political elite." It comes after a lip reader exposed Trump warning Charles of Putin's alarming 4-word threat.

His Security Council Secretary, Sergei Shoigu - who served as Minister of Defense during the war's initial years - is "associated with the risk of a coup attempt". An effort to undermine Shoigu occurred last month with the arrest of his former deputy Ruslan Tsalikov, who is suspected of corruptly accumulating a staggering fortune of nearly $68 million in family assets.

Shoigu was initially connected with coup concerns last month. These allegations are based on the analysis of "an intelligence service of a European Union country". The nation has not been identified.  .  .  .
