Moreover, during his 26-year rule, Putin has effectively abandoned his population, many of whom still struggle with the most basic standards of sanitation.

According to official statistical data, one-fourth of Russian households do not have access to centralized sewage systems or indoor sanitation facilities.

In rural areas, the situation is even more severe: in some regions, up to two-thirds of households must rely on outdoor pit latrines.

Let us imagine the scale of the absurdity we are dealing with.

It's cheaper but not by much. Drones cost US$5000 to $25000 and 35mm can cost as much as $600 per round.

I don't have a problem viewing them.  I do not have a Reddit account.  I click on the link and get a prompt asking me if I am 18 or older.  I click 'yes', and the Reddit link opens.  From there, I click the video, and it opens.

The issue with the parade is a problem for Russian ideology. The sacredness of May 9 is being eroded. The regime has built its identity on the continuity between the "Great Victory" and the current war. If the ritual weakens, that link weakens as well.

Less "pride," more "fear." The regime’s two core emotions - pride and fear - are shifting in favor of fear. The narrative of control is also undermined: if even the capital operates under restrictions, the image of omnipotence and invincibility loses credibility.

There is also an external signal of isolation. A narrow circle of guests undermines the claim that "the world supports us."

I sincerely hope that May 9 on Red Square will be quiet and somber. Or, on the contrary - very, very loud.

A series of video appeals by celebrities to President Vladimir Putin about the plight of ordinary Russians has set off an unusually public debate across the political spectrum.

At the heart of the discourse is influencer and former reality TV star Viktoria Bonya, who went viral last week for saying that “the people are afraid” of Putin and accusing officials of hiding Russians’ problems from the President. “There is a huge wall between you and us ordinary people,” Bonya said in the 18-minute video, which got over 30 million views.

A handful of other celebrities followed suit with similar appeals, sparking discussion about the potential rise of protest sentiment in Russia and whether it is still possible to criticize the authorities at all. Beyond Instagram, where Bonya’s video got 1.6 million likes and 85,000 comments, her appeal has drawn reactions from pro-government figures and opposition voices alike.

Her appeal even prompted a response from the Kremlin, which said last week that “none” of the problems she mentioned - including flooding in Dagestan, oil pollution along the Black Sea coast and internet shutdowns - had been ignored. As the debate spread, pro-Kremlin media were reportedly instructed not to “pursue Bonya’s video appeal anymore,” a source told the exiled news outlet Meduza. Pro-Kremlin bots, which left around 1,500 comments on social media network VKontakte last week, have also stopped posting about Bonya, the exiled investigative outlet Agentstvo reported Tuesday, citing a project tracking state-aligned bot activity.

Meanwhile, veteran Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov complained that his party had long been raising many of the issues Bonya discussed.

“She listed all the issues that were raised here and you had heard them: why there is an oil spill in Anapa and why there was no timely response to provide assistance to Dagestan and the Chechen republic [after the floods],” he said in the lower-house State Duma. He warned that “economic collapse is inevitable” if the issues go unaddressed, and that “by autumn we will face what happened in 1917,” referring to the revolution that toppled the Romanov dynasty and led to the creation of the Soviet Union.

A purge is underway of the generals who made the decisions to initiate the SVO

According to the Cheka-OGPU and Rucriminal.info, the explosion at the Detsky Mir building in the summer of 2025 was a terrorist attack targeting Lieutenant General Alexei Titov, deputy head of the FSB’s Fifth Service and head of the analytical department. The bomb was given to him as a gift by Elena Barysheva, the widow of an FSB officer. She died instantly, and the general, whose legs were amputated, was placed in a coma.

The circumstances of the incident, as well as the assassination attempt on GRU Deputy Chief General Vladimir Alekseyev, point to a showdown within the Russian intelligence services. A purge is underway of the generals responsible for initiating the SVO.

However, the FSB leadership decided not to respond to these “signals.” Furthermore, internal FSB investigations into both assassination attempts were terminated by decision of the FSB leadership.
