Anton Gerashchenko
@Gerashchenko_en

I don't often share my own emotions here. I mostly stick to facts and reason. But I'm actually a very emotional person.

The situation in Kyiv with freezing people in cold homes that are left without electricity, heating and water during the cold winter after deliberate Russian attacks is simply terrible.

The most vulnerable, the weakest, the old, the sick, the tiny kids and their parents - these suffer the most. They have nowhere to go or they simply can't move. A lot of people have nothing apart from those cold walls.

Their suffering doesn't help Russia reach any military goals.

Ukraine will not fall, the frontline will not collapse. Ukraine is still a large and strong country. What Russia does and what it is able to do is cause great suffering to average Ukrainians. Russia puts people on the brink of survival, makes people's lives unbearable.

This is a tragedy of a huge scale and people who are surviving through this want to understand what this is all for.

In almost four years of the full-scale war Ukraine demonstrates incredible resilience and bravery. An exhausted Ukraine is a direct threat to European security. A strong Ukraine means a protected Europe.

Ukraine needs air defense and security guarantees.

Given how badly Russian SAM systems have performed in Iran, Venezuela, and Russia, and how badly Russian tanks and IFVs have been performing against Ukraine, I kind of doubt Putin's claim about weapons sales.

India, China, and Kazakhstan were the primary recipients of Russian weapons in 2025, collectively accounting for the majority of Russia’s arms exports. According to data from Statista, India remained the leading importer, with arms imports valued at 463 million trade-indicator values (TIV) in 2024—reflecting continued strong demand in 2025. China received 30 million TIV [ does not reflect dollar amounts ] of arms from Russia in 2024, though its reliance on Russian equipment has declined as its domestic defense industry expands. Kazakhstan was the third-largest buyer, receiving 11% of Russia’s arms exports during the 2020–24 period.

Additional notable buyers in 2025 included Algeria, which received Su-35 and Su-57 fighter jets, and Iran, which secured deliveries of Su-35s and Su-34s. Serbia also shifted toward Chinese systems like the HQ-22, but Russia remains a key supplier for air defense and combat aircraft in the Balkans.

At a time when Russia desperately needs anti-air protection against an arial onslaught from Ukrainian, it is quite telling that Russia was willing to strip away from its own defenses Buks, Pantsirs, and S-400s and ship them to Venezuela.  Even the Russians know that their SAM systems are worthless.

👀 Starlink now turns off at speeds above 90 km/h. That prevents it from being used for drone flights, — Russian media

📍Flash writes that many users of the Starlink in Ukraine are already observing the first countermeasures that SpaceX took at the request of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
📍Flash also adds that this is a temporary measure, and soon there will be changes that will eliminate the use of Starlink on Russian drones.

Vladimir Putin violates Trump’s temporary winter truce, killing 5 Ukrainians in overnight airstrikes

Russian strongman Vladimir Putin reneged on his deal with President Trump to briefly pause the war in Ukraine, killing at least five and injuring more than a dozen in strikes across the battered country overnight into Saturday.

Moscow continued its relentless assault on Ukraine — despite a personal plea from Trump to suspend fighting for one week — while the war-torn country and its decimated energy infrastructure go through a deadly cold snap that’s left millions vulnerable to power outages.

“I personally asked President Putin not to fire on Kyiv and the cities and towns for a week,” Trump said during a cabinet meeting on Thursday. “It’s extraordinary cold — record-setting cold over there.”

Trump said the Russian dictator had agreed to his request — calling Moscow’s response “very nice.”

Close to 200 people had to be evacuated from their homes, including 35 children, he said.

In Kherson, in the south of the country, two people were killed, and 10 others injured, including a 14-year-old boy, regional Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin said.

The strikes damaged 14 high-rise buildings and 5 homes, he added.

Moscow tried to spin the deal on Friday claiming that it had only meant Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, was off limits — letting reporters believe it was using “Kyiv” to denote the whole country, when it was only referring to the city.

“President Trump did indeed make a personal request to President Putin to refrain from striking Kyiv for a week until Feb. 1 in order to create favorable conditions for negotiations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow Friday...

India to buy oil from Venezuela rather than Russia amid new Trump tariff threats

... India served as the top buyer of Russian oil, reaping in crude at a discount as Moscow faced heavy sanctions from the West over its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Trump had repeatedly warned India to stop purchasing Russian oil, slapping 50% tariffs on the country. He threatened to raise the rate again last month if India did not curb its purchases...

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, February 1, 2026

Excerpts:

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk restricted Starlink satellite terminals operating in Ukraine in order to counter Russia's use of Starlink on drones. Musk stated on X (formerly Twitter) on February 1 that SpaceX, at Ukraine's request, has taken “effective” steps to stop Russian forces’ use of Starlink and called on Ukrainian authorities to inform SpaceX about any necessary further measures.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated in response to Musk that SpaceX’s first steps have achieved ”real results” and that Ukraine and SpaceX are working on next steps.

Musk's and Fedorov’s statements come after recent reports that Russian forces, including elements of the Rubikon Center for Advanced Unmanned Technologies, are using Starlink terminals to extend the range of BM-35 strike drones and cheap Molniya-2 fixed-wing first-person view (FPV) drones to conduct mid-range drone strikes against the Ukrainian rear starting in late December 2025.

ISW continues to assess that these Russian strikes are an attempt to replicate prior Russian battlefield air interdiction (BAI) campaigns against Ukrainian ground lines of communication (GLOCs) that enabled recent Russian advances in the Pokrovsk and Hulyaipole directions.

Russian milbloggers claimed on February 1 that Russian drone operators started to experience Starlink signal blocking when flying drones at speeds of over 75 to 90 kilometers per hour.

The milbloggers noted that the restrictions have impacted Shahed-type, Molniya, and BM-35 strike drones and caused significant disruptions to Russian Starlink-enabled drones.

Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (MoD) advisor on defense technology and drone and electronic warfare (EW) expert Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov reported on January 31 that the Ukrainian MoD will continue to work with SpaceX and will collect information on Ukrainian military Starlink users in order to prevent the restrictions from affecting Ukrainian forces.

Russia is building up military infrastructure near the Finnish border, likely as part of wider military expansion efforts that seek to prepare the Russian force for a potential future conflict with NATO. Finnish national broadcaster Yle published satellite images between June 2024 and October 2025 showing Russian construction at the Rybka military base in Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia (approximately 175 kilometers from the Finnish border).

Yle reported that the Soviet-era garrison area has been mostly abandoned since the early 2000s but that the 44th Army Corps (AC, Leningrad Military District [LMD]) will use the base. Yle reported that the Rybka military base already contains a large air base and equipment depot.

Yle reported that satellite imagery from May and August 2025 shows that Russia is also building a new military town in Kandalaksha, Murmansk Oblast (approximately 115 kilometers from the Finnish border) for the Luptsche-Savino garrison, which Russia started to build in Winter 2024-2025 for a new artillery brigade and an engineering brigade.

ISW has previously reported on the expansion of other Russian military infrastructure along the border with Finland.

Russia restructured the Western Military District (WMD) into the LMD and Moscow Military District (MMD) in 2024, likely in order to improve Russia's strategic command along its northern border and to posture against NATO along the Finnish border.

The Russian military command also formed the 44th AC in the LMD in 2024 as part of these efforts.

Russian officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, have previously directly threatened Finland, including by applying language that Russia has used falsely justify its invasions of Ukraine to Finland.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, February 3, 2026

Mostly Headlines:

Russia resumed its combined missile and drone strike campaign against Ukrainian energy infrastructure on the night of February 2 to 3, following the brief moratorium on energy infrastructure strikes ...

Russia's overnight strike package contained an unusually high number of ballistic missiles, consistent with the Kremlin's ongoing efforts to stockpile missiles to maximize damage against civilian infrastructure ...

The February 2 to 3 strike demonstrates that Russia never intended to use the energy strikes moratorium to de-escalate the war or seriously advance the US-initiated peace negotiations ...

The short-term moratorium does not mark a significant Russian concession, however, as Russian forces continued to target Ukrainian logistics and infrastructure during the moratorium ...

The Kremlin continues to explicitly reject the Western security guarantees for Ukraine that aim to prevent another Russian invasion.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Russian State Duma officials reiterated on February 2 and 3 the Kremlin's rejections of Western security guarantees for Ukraine, again labeling such guarantees as “unacceptable” for Russia and stating that Russia would view foreign troop deployments to Ukraine as “legitimate targets.”

Russian State Duma deputies explicitly stated that Russia “cannot agree” to US and European security guarantees and claimed that the presence of foreign troops in Ukraine could lead to a third world war and direct military conflict between nuclear powers.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has recently stated that US-Ukrainian security guarantee agreements are ready for the parties to sign, and Kremlin officials are likely using narratives about a possible escalation leading to a nuclear war to push the United States to refuse to sign the security guarantees document out of fear.

ISW continues to assess that Russia is very unlikely to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine or elsewhere, and that such threats are part of the Russian cognitive warfare effort to undermine the provision of Western security guarantees for Ukraine ...

The Kremlin continues to demonstrate its commitment to its original war demands for a peace settlement in Ukraine, particularly those that aim to destroy the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), ahead of the next round of the US-Ukraine-Russia talks in Abu Dhabi ...

The Kremlin continues to weaponize religion to demand restrictions on Ukraine's sovereignty, despite Russia's own systematic religious repressions in Russia and occupied Ukraine ...

The UOC MP is not an independent religious organization, but rather an extension of the Russian state and an instrument of Russian hybrid warfare ...

The Kremlin continues efforts to distract attention from and secure concessions in the upcoming February 4-5 peace talks in Abu Dhabi, which will coincide with the expiration of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) on February 5 ...

The Kremlin has similarly been trying to use the prospect of US-Russian economic deals to persuade the United States to give in to Russia's demands about Ukraine...

The Kremlin continues to attempt to disguise and dismiss the economic impacts of its costly war in Ukraine, Western sanctions, and poor economic policy decisions ...

India is reportedly planning to curb its imports of Russian oil, which would likely further strain the Russian budget and deficit and hinder Russia's ability to fund its war effort without more economic consequences ...

Russian forces are starting to use Gerbera drones as “motherships” to carry strike or reconnaissance drones deeper into the Ukrainian rear.

Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (MoD) advisor on defense technology and drone and electronic warfare (EW) expert Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov reported on February 3 that Russian forces used a Gerbera drone as a mothership drone to carry a first-person view (FPV) drone for the first time, presumably in Ukraine.

Flash stated that Ukrainian forces have not been able to find the original FPV drone, so it is unclear if the FPV drone was a strike or reconnaissance drone. A Russian milblogger claimed that Gerbera drones (which are the much cheaper decoy version of Russia's Shahed/Geran drone) can fly 300 to 600 kilometers.

Russian forces have employed other drones, like Molniya fixed-wing FPV drones, as motherships, including to conduct strikes against Zaporizhzhia City in early October 2025.

These drones have significantly shorter ranges than Gerbera drones. Russian forces are trying to leverage Gerbera’s already long range to deploy smaller FPV drones further into the rear. Russian forces have also been increasingly employing mothership drones to conduct reconnaissance to enable precision strikes against Ukrainian training grounds, air defense systems, rocket launchers, manpower concentrations, and moving targets in the Ukrainian rear.

Gerbera mothership drones will allow Russian forces to deploy reconnaissance drones even deeper into the Ukrainian rear, increasing the number of high-value and difficult targets for Russian forces to strike. Ukrainian forces are unlikely to use air defense systems to down these small FPV drones in the deep rear, emphasizing Ukraine's need for interceptor drones and point-defense air defense systems, as EW systems are likely insufficient to defend all Ukrainian infrastructure against a geographically pervasive threat.

An unidentified drone recently crashed near a Polish military facility ...  an unspecified source stated that Polish authorities suspect that the drone was a reconnaissance drone scanning antenna arrays and that Polish forces were “helpless” and could not stop the drone ... The gendarmerie reported that preliminary findings indicate that the drone did not have a memory or SIM card. Polish authorities have not identified the actor responsible for the incident, but other European authorities have suspected Russia in other drone incidents over European military infrastructure in recent months.

ISW continues to assess that Russia is engaged in its “Phase Zero” effort - the informational and psychological condition-setting phase - to prepare for a possible NATO-Russia war in the future.[55]

Belarus continues to pursue military cooperation with the People's Republic of China (PRC) ...

Losses and casualties have no currency to the Russian elites because they don't value the lives of the people they rule.

Russians will gladly keep bleeding until Ukraine is too exhausted to cut them more.

Russians are fighting a strategic war of attrition, and winning, against a smaller foe who less blood to be bled.  A stalemate is a victory because he still occupies the Ukrainian territory he coveted since 2014.
