Focal Points by Nicolas Hulscher, MPH

Among adults sitting more than 6 hours a day, coffee drinkers had ~23% lower all-cause death risk than non-coffee drinkers.

A recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) analysis suggests something surprising: coffee may “cancel out” the increased mortality risk seen in sedentary individuals that sit for long periods of time.

Researchers analyzed 10,639 U.S. adults (NHANES 2007–2018) with mortality follow-up through Dec 31, 2019 (up to 13 years). During follow-up, there were 945 deaths, including 284 cardiovascular deaths. They adjusted for major confounders—including age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, income, BMI and waist circumference, smoking, alcohol use, diet quality, hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer history, and physical activity.

As expected, sitting was harmful:
Sitting more than 8 hours/day was linked to a 46% higher all-cause mortality risk and 79% higher cardiovascular mortality risk, compared with sitting less than 4 hours/day.

Independent of sitting time, higher coffee intake was associated with lower mortality risk overall:

Compared with non-coffee consumers, the highest coffee intake group had 33% lower all-cause mortality and 54% lower cardiovascular mortality.

But the most important finding came from the joint analysis: prolonged sitting showed a clear mortality penalty in non–coffee drinkers, while that signal was markedly blunted in coffee drinkers:
Among adults sitting more than 6 hours/day, coffee drinkers had ~23% lower all-cause death hazard than non-coffee drinkers, and the excess mortality was statistically significant only in the non-coffee group (HR 1.58; 95% CI 1.25–1.99).

This is consistent with coffee “canceling out” much of the sedentary death penalty.

My whole life has been one lie after another foisted upon me by "Experts" and research.

Eggs bad.
Eggs have been a major victim of our excessive concern about cholesterol. Yes, eggs do contain cholesterol, but they are also very nutritious and a great source of protein

Butter bad
Modern research is now showing that fat isn’t that bad for us and that high-fat low-carb diets (the reverse of typical recommendations) may be better for health and for weight loss.

Whole Milk bad.
Research has illustrated that people consuming full fat milk have a decreased chance of being obese, which is pretty much the opposite of what you might expect.

Coffee bad
benefits come from the coffee include the potential to decrease diabetes risk. At the same time, coffee does contain some nutrients and antioxidants. Overall, these aspects make coffee particularly healthy.

Red Meat BAd.
Red meat has a horrible reputation, but simply doesn’t live up to that reputation. In this case, the reputation of red meat largely comes from early research. That research had some pretty major limitations and mostly failed to prove anything.

Smoking Good.
Well we know how that worked out!

A health Tan. (Whitey only here)
Skin cancer and leather skin.

I say F'm.  Everything somewhere between moderation to extreme from now on... full speed ahead.

:amen: And the older I get more likely I am to eat "forbidden" foods. I'm gonna die. Surprise!! A piece of chocolate cream pie won't be the reason.

Agreed -- I eat things that I shouldn't be eating as well.  Yeppers, I'm going to die and there is something to be said for quality of life.

You are lucky.  I've sat through one or two and didn't enjoy either.

Yeah, they’re no great shakes.  I think I’ve only seen one - the one I referred to earlier (can’t remember the name though).

Don't forget Sucrose bad, fructose (fruit sugar, a sugar in honey) good; fructose is now (currently, may change in a year or a decade) a bogey-sugar.

I rarely sit during the day -- mostly walking or standing .... but oh ... I sure wish I could drink coffee.  The stronger the better with just a tad of creamer.

Without.  I don't add sugar to anything.

As for 'creamer' - I used to use half and half or a dollop of whole whipping cream.

I used to douse my coffee in sugar and milk or half and half but recently I decided to start drinking it black no sweetener.  I find that when I do that it definitely means I need to get good quality coffee - Starbucks stinks - and the flavor profile is very different.  My Mom - 86 y.o. and always drinking black no sugar at full strength - was definitely on to something.

Although I don't drink coffee often, when I do I use a percolator. One of the old timey kinds. Metal and used on the stove top (or camp fire).  Best coffee in the world!!

Got rid of my Keurig machine.

Made uneasy by the social media stories of outdated K-Cups with even moldy coffee grounds and you cannot see the interior as the K-Cup is opaque.

Mentally unable to buy a "Mr. Coffee" machine after a 40yr hiatus.

Back to 7-11...coffee and a plain cake donut.

I worked at a place that they knew not to bother me before noon  -- coffee included.

I remember the percolators but we never had one.  Started out with several Mr. Coffee machines, but all of them kept malfunctioning and the coffee was so-so. Then we had a Cuisinart for years that made great coffee.  Since I can't drink coffee anymore, we got rid of the Cuisinart and hubby uses a Keurig and has a cup or two a day of Green Mountain dark roast.  Ah...love the aroma....

I'm a coffee semi-snob. I buy whole bean coffee - Lavazza (1 Kg bag) or Amazon Fresh (2# bag), not something exotic or esoteric - and grind a batch every 2 or 3 days. Cuisinart burr grinder and drip coffee maker. The grinder and coffee maker probably cost the same as 25 or 30 20 oz. lattes at Starchucks or Peet's and the Cuisinart equipment is decent enough to last for years.

So, does 7-11 have better coffee than Dunkin'?

Was never a fan of Dunkin coffee...and since then their donuts have shrunk and the fillings are skimpy.

And don't get me started on how they refrigerate their French Cruellers...dumb SOBs.

You cannot trust anyplace where you pour your own coffee.  Yesterday, the 7-11 Exclusive Blend was some dark roast bull's bleep....had to shave my chest when I got home.
