Rep. Neal Dunn, R-Fla., announced Tuesday that he will retire from Congress, becoming the latest House Republican to step aside ahead of what party leaders expect to be a brutal midterm cycle for the party in power.

The five-term lawmaker said in a social media post that he was proud of his record fighting for “lower taxes, our military and veterans, the unborn, healthcare innovation, and policies that empower Americans over bureaucracy and addressing threats from Communist China, Russia and others.”

“The time has come to pass the torch to new conservative leaders, return home to Panama City, and spend more precious time with my family and our beloved grandchildren,” Dunn wrote.

Dunn represents Florida’s 2nd Congressional District, a reliably Republican seat in the Panhandle.

His exit adds to a growing list of high-profile House Republicans heading for the exits. Texas Reps. Jodey Arrington, who chairs the House Budget Committee, Morgan Luttrell, Troy Nehls and Michael McCaul have all announced plans to retire. Reps. Wesley Hunt of Texas, Andy Barr of Kentucky and Harriet Hageman of Wyoming are leaving the House to run for Senate, while Reps. Byron Donalds of Florida and Randy Feenstra of Iowa are seeking their states’ top jobs.
