When the U.S. deploys an aircraft carrier like USS Abraham Lincoln, it’s not “sending a ship.”
It’s deploying a Carrier Strike Group -- a mobile, self-contained joint combat force.

What that actually includes as a minimum👇

• ~5,000 sailors on the carrier + air wing
• ~1,500–2,000 sailors across cruisers, destroyers & logistics ships
• The aircraft carrier (floating, nuclear-powered air base)
• 65–75 aircraft (fighters, EW, AEW, helicopters)
• 1 guided-missile cruiser, usually a Ticonderoga-class cruiser,  (air & missile defense commander)
• 2–3 guided-missile destroyers, usually Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, (Anti-submarine warfare, Ballistic missile defense, strike capability)
• Nuclear attack submarine (ISR & strike...unannounced locations)
• Logistics ships enabling months at sea

This means:

– Air dominance without host-nation bases.
– Immediate strike and escalation control.
– Layered defense against air, missile, surface, and subsurface threats.

A Carrier Strike Group is not symbolism. It is sovereign, mobile combat power....ready on arrival.

For the past few weeks, IRGC had managed to bring Khamenei out of his bunker for a few minutes for his public Friday prayers.

Doubtful.  First I doubt that Iran has the technical ability to miniaturize an actual nuke to that extent - it takes a lot of skill - and second, more likely than not anything it tried to walk into Israel would be detectable.

More likely, they have made dirty bombs - conventional bombs that are designed to spread long-term radioactive material over a wide area.  Those could be more easily put into backpack form.

Don't discount China. They may have taken nuclear material to China and brought it up to weapons grade. If they think they could get away with it they could have helped them build a bomb. I wouldn't underestimate the Iranians with this. It would be a big risk.

Put bluntly: Israel managed to defend itself against Iran three times in 2024-2025 because its technology is the best it’s been in decades.

Tehran’s ballistic missile capability is now weaker than it’s been in decades. Trump had an opportunity to possibly topple Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But then, Netanyahu was so worried about Israel getting hit that he asked Trump to call off an attack.

During all of this discussion, most of Israel’s highly praised multilayer air defenses are irrelevant.  Generally, the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and the Iron Beam (laser defense) are unable to shoot down ballistic missiles. Rather, they are relegated to shooting down drones, lower-tech rockets, and cruise missiles.

Hopefully, the answer to why Netanyahu might be more confident in the future is that Israel can produce Arrow interceptors faster than Iran can produce ballistic missiles, and that, not too long from now, the Jewish state will have a better relative balance of aerial defenses to aerial threats, plus some additional American air defenses.

Or maybe the prime minister was just worried about the possibility of having to explain to the Israeli public why people died, were wounded, and lost their homes (even in small numbers) in January 2026 when the Iranian nuclear threat has been indefinitely pushed off, and the concrete gain for Israeli interests of an American attack on the Iranian regime at this point were questionable as compared to the clear gains in 2025.

In the meantime, Netanyahu’s request to Trump, and at least one of his reasons, has pierced the armor of Israeli defense officials who, since the June 2025 Iran war, have claimed that the defense establishment remained ready for any scenario.

Again, China may not have the technical ability to design and build a suitcase nuke, and if they did, I doubt they would give that tech away to Iran.

Folks toss around the idea of a “suitcase nuke” like any Tom, Dick, or Harry could throw one together if only they had weapons grade fissile material.  It ain’t that easy.

I agree with you on this...it is far more likely Iran would launch missiles (plural) with "dirty bombs" to scatter radioactive debris over wide urban areas, than create a big mushroom cloud.

I believe it is nearly impossible to shield a very physically small nuke from being detected by radiation detectors. A larger nuke buried in an oil tanker using the oil around it as a shield would be much less likely to be detected.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after returning from meetings with world leaders in Davos, Switzerland, Trump said Washington was closely monitoring Iran as US naval assets moved into the region. "We have a lot of ships going that direction, just in case," Trump said. "I'd rather not see anything happen, but we’re watching them very closely."
