This is wild. Apparently, they had those sparkly candles near (or stuck into the bottles of) some alcoholic beverages.

An inferno ripped through Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, last night. A press conference held by local officials did not reveal much, with the regional attorney general stating they were not ready to announce the cause of the blaze, or any identities of the dead.

Nevertheless, the local government stated they’d “absolutely ruled out” the possibility of a terrorist attack, and despite multiple and widely-reported eyewitness statements that there had been a major explosion, the AG said the blaze had not been started by a blast. ...

Swiss newspaper Blick notes eyewitness accounts that said champagne bottles filled with sparkler-type fireworks were served in the bar, which set fire to the ceiling. This is alleged to have caused a panicked rush with many becoming trapped. France’s BFMTV states French nationals were among the injured. They cited a French citizen eyewitness who saw the start of the blaze, saying a woman riding another person’s shoulders was carrying a champagne bottle filled with sparklers which contacted the ceiling, setting it on fire. ...

There are also reports of an explosion. Propane is in common use there. Hard to say what happened yet.

Fire retardant spray.
One of many available, for a nominal cost, all these drapes, hangings, and even ceilings, could be treated...

Almost all of these panic nightclub, multiple deaths events involve rapid spread of fire through vulnerable materials into the event space, and a crushing panic as people try to get out an insufficient number of exits.

Stop the fire before it starts.

The injured were so numerous that the intensive care unit and operating theatre at the regional hospital quickly hit full capacity, said Mathias Reynard, head of the regional government of the Valais Canton.

While officials said Thursday it was too early to determine the fire's cause, investigators have already ruled out that it could have been an attack.  ...

So apparently the ceiling was covered with textured acoustic foam - that was highly flammable... That's why the fire spread across the ceiling very rapidly.
