Neil Sedaka dies at 86

The prolific Brill Building songwriter had a string of hits for himself, flourishing in the late 1950s and early 1960s with light pop tunes such as "Calendar Girl," "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen," before his career was temporarily derailed by the British Invasion. In the 1970s, he made a successful comeback as a writer ("Love Will Keep Us Together," "Solitaire") and singer ("Laughter in the Rain," "Bad Blood").

Sedaka's Today's Mini-Concert, a pandemic-era Web series, ran through his entire discography and laid out his life story.

Sedaka suffered a sudden and ultimately fatal medical emergency this morning after no signs of poor health prior to this.

I liked Neil.  Extremely talented and helpful to other artists.  He gave The Captain and Tenielle their big break.  And I preferred his remake of "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" in the 70's.
I don’t owe tolerance to people who disagree with my existence.
I will NOT comply.

Neil was a great songwriter too!

https://concord.com/publishing-roster/neil-sedaka/

Quote
Singer. Songwriter. Composer. Pianist. Author. These are just a few of the titles that can be used to describe Neil Sedaka. His impressive sixty year career ranges from his roots as a classically trained pianist at The Juilliard School of Music, being one of the first teen pop sensations of the 50s, a relevant songwriter for himself and other artists in the 60s, a superstar in the 70s, remaining a constant force in writing and performing presently.

Sedaka and his creative partner, Greenfield were deemed as one of the original creators of the “Brill Building” sound in the late fifties and early sixties when they were the first to sign with Don Kirshner and Al Nevins at Aldon Music.  Aldon Music would go on to sign Neil Diamond, Carole King, and Paul Simon among many others, and they became the center of the pop world.

Sedaka catapulted into stardom after Connie Francis recorded his “Stupid Cupid.” She then sang the theme song Neil and Howard had written for the 1960 MGM spring break classic, Where the Boys Are, which would be her biggest hit. Rhythm and blues stars Clyde McPhatter and LaVern Baker also scored hits with his songs. As a result of these hits, Sedaka was able to sign a contract with RCA as a writer and performer of his own material. Sedaka soon recorded chart toppers “The Diary,” “Oh! Carol,” ” Stairway to Heaven,” “Calendar Girl,” “Little Devil,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” “Next Door To An Angel,” and “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” songs that have become a part of peoples’ lives and can instantly take listeners back to special moments.

Throughout the British Invasion during the 1960’s, Neil wrote hit songs for artists including Frank Sinatra (The Hungry Years), Elvis Presley (Solitaire),  Tom Jones (“Puppet Man”), The Monkees (When Love Comes Knocking At Your Door), and The Fifth Dimension (Workin’ on a Groovy Thing).
aka "nasty degenerate SOB," "worst of the worst at Free Republic," "Garbage Troll," "Neocon Warmonger," "Filthy Piece of Trash," "damn $#%$#@!," "Silly f'er," "POS," "war pig," "neocon scumbag," "insignificant little ankle nipper," "@ss-clown," "neocuck," "termite," "Uniparty Deep stater," "Never Trump sack of dog feces," "avid Bidenista," "filthy Ukrainian," "war whore," "fricking chump," "psychopathic POS," "depraved SOB," "Never Trump Moron," "Lazarus," "sock puppet," and "Timber Bunny."

Joe McDonald, frontman for the infamous short-lived Country Joe and the Fish, dies at 84

Though McDonald's collaboration with Barry Melton (the Fish of the group) lasted only four years from 1966 to 1970, the duo managed to capture the antiwar and psychedelic spirit of the era more explicitly than any other group, most famously with their profane version of "The Fish Cheer" and the "Feel Like I'm a-Fixin' to Die Rag," which got them kicked off The Ed Sullivan Show before they made their scheduled appearance. They had some other minor hits during that time as well, the highest-charting being their #98 record "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine."

Orion Samuelson, America's most prominent farm broadcaster for decades, dies at 91

Samuelson began his life as a farm boy on a rural farm with no electricity in Wisconsin. A health condition prevented him from working on a farm full-time, so he eventually decided to become a broadcaster. After bouncing around various stations in Wisconsin, Samuelson landed in Chicago in 1960, where he joined radio station WGN as host of the National Barn Dance, a country music show that at the time was a rival to the Grand Ole Opry.

His upbringing on a farm led him to his most famous vocation, as an agriculture broadcaster. Samuelson read the farm news every morning on WGN for 60 years until his retirement. In 1975, Samuelson became nationally known when WGN introduced U.S. Farm Report in syndication, which he hosted for 30 years; after he left that show, he moved to the identically formatted This Week in Agribusiness and hosted that show for another 15 years.

As one of Illinois's best-liked Republicans, he attempted to enter the 2004 U.S. Senate race but was forced to abandon the campaign when doctors warned him he might die if he attempted the campaign. That effectively cleared the way for Democrat Barack Obama to rise to fame and the presidency.

For many years, I used to get up early on a Saturday morning to catch the U.S. Farm Report before the cartoons. I had family in the farming business so it fascinated me to keep up with the trends in the industry (and I still do watch those shows).

The main hook for me was the long-range weather forecasts that he had his meteorologist Greg Soulje give out, which amazed me given that most forecasts at the time didn't even reach out four days. Eventually after I learned meteorology I realized they weren't very accurate, but hey. It was good for the era.

Quote
Matt Clark, the familiar character actor who like sagebrush found his way into Westerns including Paul Newman’s The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, John Wayne’s The Cowboys and Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales, has died. He was 89.

Clark died Sunday in Austin, Texas, his daughter, producer Amiee Clark, told The Hollywood Reporter. He broke his back a few months ago, she said.

Clark also acted alongside Robert Redford in Sydney Pollack’s Jeremiah Johnson (1972) and Brubaker (1980) — in the latter, he portrayed Purcell, the former warden’s clerk, in one of his best known roles — and opposite Eastwood in Don Siegel’s The Beguiled (1971), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) and Honkytonk Man (1982).

Very true.

Legendary actor Chuck Norris has died aged 86 following a sudden medical emergency in Hawaii.

The actor passed away Thursday morning, according to a post shared by his family to Instagram.

'While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and at peace.'

It is unclear what medical emergency the actor suffered, which was reportedly a sudden unexpected illness.

The Best Chuck Norris Movies, Ranked

MovieWeb
By Brent Wiggins
Nov 1, 2022

Martial artist and actor Chuck Norris is known to the internet as the World's Greatest Human, a satirical factoid of incredible strength and unwavering masculinity. For example, you might have heard in grade school that Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups; he pushes the Earth down. Before the surge of meme fame, Norris served in the United States Air Force in 1958, where his outfit called him Chuck instead of Carlos, his birth name. While stationed at Osan Air Base in South Korea, he learned the Korean martial art Tang Soo Do, eventually earning a black belt.

In 1962, Norris opened his own martial arts studio in Torrance, California.

He developed a personal brand of karate he called Chun Kuk Do, meaning "Universal Way." Norris competed in many tournaments to promote his studio and establish a chain of karate schools, where he trained notable celebrities, including Steve McQueen, Priscilla Presley, and Donnie Osmond. It was not until 1974, when McQueen convinced Norris to take up acting. The prized fighter became the first American martial arts star and a permanent fixture of the action genre.

The world lost a legend, but the 'facts' will live forever. 🥋🇺🇸 Chuck Norris was the ultimate symbol of American strength, discipline, and faith. He didn't just play a hero on screen; he lived it every day through his service to veterans and his commitment to our country’s values.
