At Harvard University today, professors who teach Western history are history.

James Hankins, a specialist in Renaissance thought, was one of the last holdouts.

Now Hankins, who has just published a hefty book that teaches what Harvard doesn’t — “The Golden Thread: A History of the Western Tradition, Vol. 1” — has decamped for the University of Florida’s Hamilton School of Classical and Civic Education.

It’s not the warmer weather that’s drawn him away from Cambridge, Mass.

It’s the contrast in intellectual climates: frozen and infertile, where Western history is concerned, at Harvard; full of green shoots at the University of Florida.

“We have not hired with tenure a historian in a Western field — ancient, medieval, early modern or modern — in a decade,” Hankins says about his Harvard department, which in that time “has lost eight senior historians in Western fields — all major figures — through death, retirement or departure for other universities.

“I will be the ninth, and I am not expecting to be replaced.”

The loss isn’t just Harvard’s: “The replacement of Western history by global history” has done “serious harm . . . to the socialization of young Americans,” the historian warned Monday in Compact magazine.

“When you don’t teach the young what civilization is, it turns out, people become uncivilized.”

In the 40 years Hankins taught at Harvard, he saw his profession shift its focus from European civilization to cultures historically considered barbarian.

“In this absurdist rendering of world history, Central Asian peoples,” for example, “are presented as the drivers of cultural innovation, spreading their benign influence east and west via the Silk Road.”

This is branded as “‘de-centering the West,’ where Western countries are literally put in their place as an ugly growth on the back side of Eurasia.”

Mongol hordes aren’t the only protagonists of the new history, however: Anyone who isn’t white qualifies.

Professor James Hankins decided to retire from Harvard University in 2021, and now he’s shredding the school on his way out the door.

Hankins waited out a four-year retirement contract that finally ended several weeks ago. Now, he’s unleashing a scathing op-ed that calls out the school’s “strict COVID regime” and wokeness, something the right has been warning about for years.

“Two weeks ago I gave my last lecture at Harvard, where I have been a history professor for forty years. My four decades of experience at one of the world’s leading universities have given me a unique vantage point to trace the replacement of Western history by global history,” the professor writes. “This change is part of the reason why the younger generation finds itself in a state of moral and intellectual disorientation.”

“My decision to retire was not a sudden one. I am coming to the end of a four-year retirement contract that I signed in the fall of 2021. That year I decided I no longer wanted to teach at Harvard. We had just endured almost two years under the university’s strict Covid regime,” Hankins added. “This was a form of emergency governance that mirrored to a fault the whole country’s uncritical acceptance of The Science and its proclivity, when backed by public power, for tyrannous invasions of private life. At Harvard, professors were told we had to lecture in masks and give seminars on zoom. Neither practice accorded with my idea of liberal education.”

He recalled the “Summer of Floyd” and the “serious consequences” that it had on how Harvard would conduct business in the future.

To its immense credit, my college required two semesters of such courses (they called them Humanities I and II) for everyone, regardless of major. How on earth do you get well-rounded people if you don't expose them to art, literature, history, culture, and the like? As noted in the Daily Signal article, “When you don’t teach the young what civilization is, it turns out, people become uncivilized.”

CLOSE all colleges and universities (except for medical and sci/tech branches).
FIRE the professors and administrators and BLACKLIST them from ever working again in a position that can influence young people.
SEND HOME the students and tell them to find real jobs
SEIZE the properties and sell them or convert them to functions that will actually prove useful, such as housing for the homeless.

A history professor who has taught at Harvard for 40 years is publicly calling out the Ivy League school over race-based hiring and admissions policies, a “shocking indifference” to antisemitism, and for its eroding commitment to teaching students about Western history.

James Hankins wrote in a Compact Magazine essay titled “Why I’m Leaving Harvard” that his decision was largely influenced by the school’s abandonment of merit in favor of diversity quotas, which he said entirely changed “the way we conducted our affairs,” leaving extraordinary candidates behind if they did not have Harvard’s desired skin color or gender.

In 2020, Hankins said, “the university had collectively taken a knee during the Summer of Floyd.”

“This turned out not to be empty virtue-signaling, as I expected, but had serious consequences for the way we conducted our affairs,” he wrote. “In reviewing graduate student applicants in the fall of 2020 I came across an outstanding prospect who was a perfect fit for our program. In past years this candidate would have risen immediately to the top of the applicant pool. A qualified, competent person is a qualified, competent person regardless of race.

Harvard is trying to create a false narrative of 'diversity' by engaging in race-based tokenism that is devoid of merit, qualifications, and competency - public relations and marketing fraud.

Minorities are completely capable of achieving at the same level as whites when provided the same opportunities and the same resources.  They don't need patronizing benevolent rich white limousine liberals to give them handouts.  They deserve access to the same resources and the same opportunities to give themselves a hand up.
