U.S. Bishops Condemn ‘Vilification’ of Migrants, Affirm Nations Have Right to Border Control

The head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Sunday warned of “widespread” fear among immigrant communities in response to President Donald Trump’s mass deportation policies and emphasized the need to uphold human dignity in immigration enforcement.

Archbishop Paul Coakley, newly elected president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), said during a CBS interview that federal immigration crackdowns are generating what he called “fear in a rather widespread manner” within immigrant communities. While recognizing the government’s duty to regulate migration and uphold border security, Coakley underscored what he described as the Church’s position that such policies must not undermine human dignity or moral principles.

“It’s something that concerns us all,” Coakley noted. “People have a right to live in security and without fear of random deportations.” He added that while nations have the right to control their borders, the Church continues to underscore that “we always have to treat people with dignity, God-given dignity.

The state doesn’t award it, and the state can’t take it away.”

Not if they broke the law and entered the country illegally, they don’t. 

Question for the bishops:  if I break into your church-provided personal apartment and make myself at home there, am I entitled to “live in security” in your apartment without fear of random eviction?

Or am I merely a burglar and a trespasser who can and should be arrested and removed from the premises by the police, by force if necessary?

Hypocrites.  And BTW, according to Dante, hypocrites don’t get to heaven, ever.

Observing that someone who violated a law - whether an immigration law or something like stealing or drunk driving - did violate a law is not "vilification," it's just a fact. Facts are pesky things to the left.

To target it more precisely, require that a person show a US passport, or valid U.S. visa, and report the document numbers to IRS along with the details of the transaction, or else the transfer is subject to a 50% withholding tax that can be refunded if the transferor can subsequently demonstrate that they are present in the U.S. legally.

@Kamaji Slow down tiger. They are breaking the law at a lower rate then other minorities, so you can't say just because they are criminals that they should be treated that way. You are lumping an entire class of people into one group based on the actions of a few. Correlation does not imply causation. You above all should be welcoming them with open arms. Just so I and the rest of the forum is clear: in your eyes Murder and other violent crimes committed by minorities is okay, but entering the country illegally is a no-no.

Actually, no, you didn't.  You simply demonstrated that you are fundamentally incapable of evaluating people on the basis of their choices - that what matters is what people choose to do - and instead you evaluate them on the same sorts of irrelevant characteristics - like race and ethnicity - that all of your fellow progressives use.

My original statement is fundamentally different from you and your perverted view of people because I evaluate on the basis of what they did, not on the basis of their inherent characteristics.

Clearly a big part of the problem. The lack of distinction between illegals and lawful immigrants is likely causing a great deal of consternation among communities of lawful immigrants because the stinking press keeps treating both as if they are the same thing.
