Diane Crawford had been driving kids to school in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, for over 30 years, subcontracting routes through Rohrer Buses and even buying her own bus in 2024 to keep serving the community she loved. Then, in January 2025, she posted a simple handwritten note on her bus: “Out of respect to English-only students, there will be no speaking Spanish on this bus.” Signed “ownership/management,” it was aimed at one bilingual student she believed was riling up others—possibly bullying in a language she couldn’t understand. Crawford later told CBS 21, “I didn’t know if he was bullying somebody, telling them to do something they shouldn’t do… Maybe it should have said, ‘No bullying in any language,’ but I didn’t mean it to be anything but to correct him.”




Ridiculous. Sue them for discrimination.

Speaking from the perspective of one who is "English-only", how exactly are my coworkers being disrespectful to me when they speak their native Mandarin or Vietnamese in my vicinity? And if one is mocking me to another who understands that language, how am I particularly harmed, since I do not understand the mockery?

Minimally, demanding English-only in such circumstances out of a supposed fear that someone might be mocking someone or plotting something-or-other is rude at best. If the driver really thought bullying had been happening, she should have (or maybe, would have) spoken with the principal. Or the pertinent parent. Or, with witnesses, the supposed bully.

There is a story about this, from the Civil War I believe, of prisoners on a train under guard, Speaking a language such as German or Italian (Swiss connection), about how they’d make an escape etc.  The guard knew the language so they were put under special wraps.

Yes, it is common courtesy.  But society in the US has become so low class, it’s not surprising, much less the catering to illegals.

I'm sure the bus driver feels as you do, but she is responsible for keeping order on the bus and needs to know if other children are being bullied.

I live in South Central Pennsylvania, and there is a large illegal alien community here that services the farms and apple orchards, and run or staff a number of small auxiliary businesses.  They keep to themselves and the farmers and growers protect them since they are their cheap labor forces.  The orchard owners also maintain hidden "dormitories" for transient illegals who are brought in during harvests at night, do the required work, and then move on to the next farm, and then the next, until harvest is over, at which point they either hide-out in plain site somewhere or return to the home countries until the next harvest.  The farmers and growers openly brag about this arrangement and I wish that ICE would pay them a visit.

Some years ago I was working in HR for a company that hired migrants for the holidays to work in shipping dept and on the loading docks.  All legal and above board. They had just completed the fall harvest picking crops and then worked for us and then, I assumed, went back to mexico.  Every night 4 or 5 school busses would show up full of the workers.  Day one we would photo copy their I-9 forms and fill out there withholding forms.  From there it was orientation were I gave the the mandatory Sexual Harassment seminar.  I would talk and a translator would repeat what I said.  I thought it was a waste of time since they never interacted with the other employees. They were all male and we fed them on the docks.   Not sure who they were gonna sexually harass?

Take pictures and send them in.  Unfortunately PA is a two-party consent state, so you would have a hard time legally recording anyone bragging about the situation.

Take photos and send them in to ICE.  Forget the locals.  If they haven’t done anything by now, you know they’re in on it.
