The Reiner Murders: a common humanity view
By Mike McDaniel

The murder of Hollywood Director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer Reiner by Reiner’s 32-year-old adult son Nick has become another front in the ongoing political war.  Nick is a long-time drug addict, in and out of rehab many times, and often homeless on the streets of multiple states. He reportedly trashed his parent’s home at least once in the past, and some reports suggest he was diagnosed with schizophrenia not long before the alleged murders, apparently committed with a knife or other sharp object.

Rob Reiner was perhaps best known for his writing and directing, particularly the classic rock “mockumentary” This is Spinal Tap. He’ll certainly always be remembered and appreciated for The Princess Bride.

In the last decade, however, Reiner’s accomplishments were overshadowed by his unrelenting, Trump Derangement Syndrome-fueled hatred for Donald Trump. Scarcely a week went by that Reiner didn’t viciously attack Trump on social media and other venues. No rhetoric was too deranged, no accusation too unfounded or irrational. Like other celebrities, Reiner was so absorbed by hatred for Donald Trump and any American who supported him, as to cause reasonable people to doubt his sanity. That kind of obsession isn’t healthy for anyone.

Nick Reiner started going to drug rehab  treatment facilities at age 15 and had reportedly been in and out of rehab at least 18 times by the time he was 22.

Here's a common humanity question:  Why was he sent back to rehab after three failures?  His family had options most families do not.

Hollywood is filled with actors who move their families beyond the reaches of the Hollywood culture --- Bruce Willis went to Idaho, Kevin Costner to Colorado, Julia Roberts to NM, Matthew McConaughey to Texas etc., etc.....  My personal favorite is Angela Lansbury--- in addition to the growing drug problem in LA, her daughter was becoming fascinated with the Charlie Manson crowd.  Landsbury packed them all up and moved to Ireland --- and stayed there.  During her last interview this side of paradise she said it was still the best decision of her life.

I don't understand why Reiner, with the reason and the means to move away, didn't.

He liked the attention. Getting into all the best restaurants without reservations, people kissing his ass all over town, adoring fans, etc.

It can be addictive.

Not all of us are into the Hollywood pop culture vibe. Reiner was a typical pushy loudmouth d-bag liberal who couldn't defend his views but was happy to go full Soviet show trial/kangaroo court on his enemies.

Blew that guy off a long time ago, so exactly how am I supposed to feel now? Really just don't feel that much at all. Not my circus, not my monkeys.

That was more important than his kids' well being.

It's not uncommon for there to be a dual-diagnosis of addiction and mental illness.

The mental illness feeds the habit.

The habit feeds the mental illness.

It is a negative feedback loop that progressively gets worse.

Some patients make the issue worse by stopping anti-addiction and mental health medications whenever they start feeling better.

What do you do with an adult that is incapable of functioning in society, short of penal incarceration?

There are only three places for a non-functional mentally ill addict to end up - jail, mental institutions, the morgue.

Reiner had only two real-world options - attempt to forcibly commit his adult son to a locked, in-patient mental health facility against his son's will; or leave him to fend for himself on the streets.

An insane person is always the last to recognize his own insanity.

How can you help someone who habitually stops doing the things necessary to make himself better?
"Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it’s entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end." - Alan Simpson, Frontline Video Interview

That was more important than his kids' well being.

Sadly, yes.

Reiner was immensely successful but that success came at a very high price.

I don't agree @DefiantMassRINO   Reiner started going to drug rehab treatment facilities at age 15 and had reportedly been in and out of rehab at least 18 times by the time he was 22.

By the time this kid was 17 his family knew he was in serious trouble, and the treatments were not helping.  But, nothing changed ---- except Reiner, the father, filmed a documovie about the problem.

Reiner could have gotten him away from the drugs without confining him and under the care of a qualified doctor --- round the clock if necessary.  This kid could have been saved --- when a kid.

Whatever Reiner Sr.'s mental illness was, it's possible his son's problems were feeding it and directing the elder's decisions.

So many ruined lives.   **nononono*
