US launches 'vengeance' attack on ISIS targets after National Guard soldiers killed
Several suspected terror sites were targeted across central Syria after two Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in attack

The U.S. conducted military strikes against the Islamic State in Syria on Friday, following on a promise by President Donald Trump to avenge the deaths of two Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in a terrorist attack in that country last week.

American military forces struck more than 70 targets of suspected ISIS sites at several locations across the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria as part of "Operation Hawkeye Storm," referring to Iowa, which is known as the Hawkeye State.

"Earlier today, U.S. forces commenced OPERATION HAWKEYE STRIKE in Syria to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites in direct response to the attack on U.S. forces that occurred on December 13th in Palmyra, Syria," War Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on X.

‘Declaration of vengeance’: US warplanes hammer 70+ ISIS targets in massive retaliation strike

A fleet of American aircraft, including F-15 Eagles and A-10 Thunderbolts, pounded central Syria on Friday in a sweeping retaliatory strike ordered by the Trump administration following an ambush that killed three Americans last week.

Defense officials described the operation as a "large-scale" assault hitting roughly 70 targets identified as Islamic State infrastructure and weapons depots. The air power, which included Apache helicopters and Jordanian F-16s, concentrated fire on rural sectors of Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and areas near Palmyra.
 
"This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance," Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated. "The United States of America, under President Trump’s leadership, will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people."
 
The barrage comes days after a gunman, suspected of ISIS ties, opened fire on a lunch meeting between U.S. and Syrian security officials. The attack claimed the lives of Army Sgts. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar and William Nathaniel Howard, as well as American interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat.

President Trump, who recently attended the dignified transfer of the victims' remains at Dover Air Force Base, issued a stark warning on social media following the strikes: "YOU WILL BE HIT HARDER THAN YOU HAVE EVER BEEN HIT BEFORE IF YOU, IN ANY WAY, ATTACK OR THREATEN THE U.S.A."

TAMPA, Fla. — U.S.  Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted a strike in northwest Syria on Jan. 16, that resulted in the death of a leader affiliated with Al-Qaeda who had direct ties to an ISIS terrorist responsible for an ambush which killed two U.S. service members and an American interpreter on Dec. 13, 2025.

Bilal Hasan al-Jasim was an experienced terrorist leader who plotted attacks and was directly connected with the ISIS gunman who killed and injured American and Syrian personnel last month in Palmyra, Syria.

“The death of a terrorist operative linked to the deaths of three Americans demonstrates our resolve in pursuing terrorists who attack our forces,” said Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander. “There is no safe place for those who conduct, plot, or inspire attacks on American citizens and our warfighters. We will find you.”

CENTCOM launched large-scale strikes in Syria in response to the Dec. 13 attack. The operation, dubbed Hawkeye Strike, resulted in U.S. and partner forces hitting more than 100 ISIS infrastructure and weapons site targets with over 200 precision munitions.

Additionally, U.S. and partner forces have captured more than 300 ISIS operatives and killed over 20 across Syria during the past year, removing terrorists who posed a direct threat to the United States and regional security.
