In my opinion, they didn’t portray Archie as the idiot and meathead as the intelligent one

To me, it was more of their conflict around their different political opinions

Archie Bunker was the typical working class portrayal of that era. And meathead wasn’t exactly an overachiever either.

For one thing, Carol O'Connor was a terrific stage actor. His comedic and dramatic timing were awesome. Just watch his face in the clip @Sighlass posted. He played Archie not as a fool, but as a regular guy - a man of a certain time and place, and there were a lot of people who identified with him, in spite of what Norman Lear might have expected.

Even as the leftists of the time expected the audience to see him as a racist fool, that was hardly a universal reaction.

MAD Magazine (which I read cover-to-cover every month in my teens, when it was quite literally a work of art) famously parodied All in the Family, offering that "They're not laughing at him (meaning Archie)... they're laughing with him!!"

No. More like brutally honest with a twist of humor and a little touch of the Kramdens (Honeymooners). I liked the show then, we all did. It often ridiculed the leftist viewpoint.

As for Reiner and his attitudes and behaviour later, none of us would say he deserved to be murdered for it, as much as we find it to be undesirable.

How this thread got to be speculation about Trump's health from a picture of him scowling with one side of his face in the shot, I don't know, but TDS is a powerful thing. For those speculating stroke, facial paralysis is just that--paralysis. While it can be transient, it is often accompanied by more symptoms indicating a neurological deficit on the same side. Everybody needs a hobby, so go down that rabbit hole if you want.

As for President Trump and his comments, I know his stock currency is to strike back or lash out at those who insult him personally or politically. Many times, that has served him well. There are times, however, showing grace or statesmanship is the better course.

Reiner didn't insult the President @Lando Lincoln   Reiner used the full scope of the government, his talents, connections, fame and wallet to remove the democratically elected President of the United States. He was not just a disgruntled Hollywood has-been mouthing off for attention.

Reiner chose to run with the big dogs, and did so frequently.

Nick Reiner, arrested in connection with the murders of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, reportedly left behind a chilling trail of blood in a hotel.

Nick checked in at the Pierside Santa Monica hotel about 4 a.m. Sunday with his credit card, hours after a harsh dispute with his father at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, sources with direct knowledge told TMZ. Witnesses who saw him arrive described his demeanor as “tweaked out,” though they noted there were no visible cuts or blood on his body at the time. His hotel room allegedly told a very different story.

Nick booked the room for a single night but never formally checked out, TMZ reported. When hotel staff entered the room later that morning, they were allegedly confronted with a horrifying scene.

The shower was “full of blood,” blood was found on the bed and the window had been obscured using bed sheets, sources said.

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Robbery-Homicide detectives arrived at the location Monday to collect evidence and speak with employees as the investigation intensified, according to TMZ. Nick was later found roughly 20 miles away and apprehended in the vicinity of downtown Los Angeles.

Nick Reiner appeared in court for the first time Wednesday wearing a blue suicide prevention vest.

When a judge asked if Reiner waived his rights, Nick said, "Yes, your honor." His arraignment is set for Jan. 7.

The 32-year-old wore no shirt under the blue vest that went down to his knees. Nick's hands plus his feet were shackled.

Nick was booked on suspicion of murder and transferred Monday to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Nick was "not medically cleared" to appear in court Tuesday, his lawyer Alan Jackson told Fox News Digital.

Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead inside their Brentwood home on Dec. 14. Their son was later arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Rob Reiner and his wife Michele died due to multiple sharp force injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiners office.

Other significant conditions contributed to their deaths, the initial report said. Medical examiners determined Dec. 14 as the day the Reiners died, and listed their deaths as homicides.

Rob and his wife Michele were found dead Sunday inside their Brentwood home around 3:30 p.m.

Their son Nick was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m. Sunday. He was booked on suspicion of murder and transferred Monday to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

What Reiner said about politics really doesn't have anything to do with his and his wife's murder...at their son's hand. Since I have read that the son was in and out of rehab numerous times, Reiner tried to get him help. He didn't reap what he sowed. What a horrible thing to say.

While my views are not quite a loud as @MeganC 's, I can understand her feelings. There is a lot more to dealing with a person with mental health issues and addictions than just sending them into rehab. And frankly given some of the comments that Reiner made over the years about Trump. I have to wonder about his own mental stability.I am not going to fault Trump on this one.

There's only three places for a mentally ill person to go without in-patient treatment ... morgue, jail, psychiatric hospital.

Some, when they feel better, stop taking their meds as directed, and they start to spiral again.

There are some people who are unable to take care of themselves, but there is no long-term place for them to go until they kill themselves or kill someone else.

My wife works at one of the Psych centers here in VA. Quite a few of her "clients" are on the revolving door policy. They do not have an "outside support " system. Until they make a firm commitment to maintain they need someone to hold them accountable. Samone to make sure they get to appointments, take their meds, someone to talk to, etc....  After her last confinement, it took 6 months to get her on the right meds, balance the dosage and frequency, and find a doctor that would listen to her and not just "rubber stamp" things.
