The morning after Thanksgiving has a hangover all its own.
Not the kind brought on by turkey, wine, or the inevitable family politics bouncing around your skull. No, this was political, institutional, existential.

As I sipped lukewarm coffee and scrolled through headlines, a memory stabbed through the mental fog.

The PSA.

A week before Thanksgiving, six retired military officers, now members of Congress, had appeared in a video, staring directly into the camera, delivering a stark warning to active-duty troops:

“Don’t follow illegal orders.”

At the time, it had seemed abstract, a civics-minded message, even patriotic.
But in the aftermath of the Iran strike, executed with flawless precision, it was unmistakably targeted.

"Signal" is indeed a cell phone messaging app, but it's encrypted end-to-end.  A couple of years ago countries like Iran were pretty upset at it's availability because people were communicating with it, and the Iranian government couldn't listen in.  So what if it could be used by anybody with a  smart phone?
