Powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes Japan's northeast

    * Yen weakens against major currencies after quake news

TOKYO, Dec 8 (Reuters) - A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake shook northeastern Japan late on Monday, prompting orders for about 90,000 residents to evacuate and tsunami warnings that hours later were downgraded to advisories.
The Japan Meteorological Agency initially said a tsunami as high as 3 metres (10 feet) could hit Japan's northeastern coast after the earthquake struck off the coast at 11:15 p.m. (1415 GMT).

Tsunami warnings were issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, and tsunamis from 20 to 70 cm (7 to 27 inches) high were observed at several ports, JMA said.  ...

The quake was off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, which is the northern tip of Honshu. The nearest significant city was Hachinohe, ~40 miles SE of Aomori. For the sake of comparison, this quake was around 7X the energy of the 1989 Loma Prieta quake that was centered near Santa Cruz and did damage in SF and Oakland. Depending on local geography, the quake was probably felt at least from Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido south to Sendai on Honshu.

Some people in that area probably lost something more odoriferous than their minds. A 7.5 at New Madrid might be felt as far east as parts of the US East Coast and as far north as Chicago or into Canada.

Japan experiences hundreds of earthquakes a day, though most are not felt. California is a bit less seismically active but it still experience a couple hundred a day. Again, most are not felt.
