Another State Suffers Blow Over Truck Driver Licenses

The U.S. Department of Transportation said it may withhold up to $30.4 million in federal highway funds from Minnesota for improperly issuing commercial driver licenses to non-U.S. residents.

The department gave Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz 30 days to revoke the licenses and come into compliance after a federal audit.

It also removed nearly 3,000 commercial driver license training providers from a government registry and placed about 4,000 others on notice.

The action follows broader USDOT moves, including threats to pull funds from California and a $40.6 million withholding there for English-proficiency violations.

It comes amid the Trump administration’s efforts to tighten English and visa rules for foreign truck drivers.
