One employee told WTAJ News that they and their coworkers were informed of the closure by company officials, and those who remain until February will receive severance packages.
“I know probably at least a dozen people that work over there. Some of them are friends and I feel for them,” Eric Blubaugh, a lifelong Berlin resident, said.
“We depend on a lot of the revenues from the sale of electricity, the garbage and the sewer and water. It affects everybody,” Brett Custer, former Berlin Borough Council member and owner of the Diamond Gas Station, said.
The Snyder of Berlin plant has been a staple in Somerset County and across the state, and its closure is expected to have significant repercussions for the community. Many workers fear they will have nowhere else to go due to a slumping economy and scarce job opportunities.
