Young Americans give big thumbs down to Democrats, Republicans, Trump: poll

Survey of younger Americans reveals warning signs for Republicans and Democrats ahead of 2026 midterm elections

Young Americans, feeling the country is off course and their futures unstable, are deeply pessimistic about the nation's two major political parties and about the state of the economy, according to a new national poll.

And the 51st edition of the Harvard Youth poll, released on Thursday, also indicates that Americans aged 18–29 heavily disapprove of the jobs President Donald Trump is doing in the White House and Democrats and Republicans are doing in Congress.

Gains by Trump and Republicans in courting younger voters helped the GOP win back the White House and the Senate and hold their House majority in last year's elections.

But the national poll is the latest to show warning signs for Republicans as they aim to hold their congressional majorities in next year's midterm elections. The survey offers mixed signals for Democrats, who are energized by ballot box successes this year.

According to the poll, which was conducted by the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School, Trump's approval rating stood at 29%, down two points from Harvard's most recent survey, issued last spring. And the president's approval rating of his handling of the economy stood at just 26%.

But federal lawmakers didn't fare any better.

The approval rating for congressional Democrats stood at 27%, with only 26% saying Republicans in Congress were doing a good job.

"Young Americans hold persistently low views of national leadership, reflecting a belief that political leaders are not responsive to the economic and technological pressures they face. Despite this widespread skepticism," the poll's release highlights.

excerpt:
Quote
The poll questioned 2,040 U.S. residents aged 18–29 from Nov. 3–7. The survey, conducted in coordination with Ipsos Public Affairs, had an overall sampling error of plus or minus 2.94 percentage points.

I understand the pain our young feel, but blaming Trump for 40 years of governmental drunken sailor deficit spending seems a tad misguided.

He is trying to resurrect our industrial base, vs. the dim pukes who have tried to destroy it.

I don't think anybody gets a thumbs up, nobody has any ideas on what to do. Trump has 3 years to turn things around.

At this point, nobody. These idiots can't even be trusted to get married and start families. Their own biology is short-circuited.

We've gone past low-trust society and flown straight into a zero-trust "society" (and even that's putting it loosely). Our generations and the ones after us have nothing left to live for.

Article is based on a poll, I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

As far as the GOP being in deep trouble, I don't need a poll to tell me that.  They've done exactly nothing since Trump has been in office.  Notta. Zilch. Time is a wasting.  Instead we have all these got the DEMS now articles with Bondi leading the investigations which equates to a big fat zero.

Some GOP states are trying to redistrict but I don't think it going to be enough to save the House, perhaps not even the Senate.

The GOP needs to get off their butts and do something for a change!

It has been the constant drumbeat of their existence.

Add on top of that, many of their formative years, from COVID to the throes of Bidenflation, it has been a hard patch of road.

Despite all misconception, stopping inflation (if you took it to zero), would do nothing to bring prices down. It is past inflation that got them where they are. All that has been done is to decrease the rate at which prices are increasing.
Blaming Trump for the prices which stay high after Bidneflation, would have been like blaming Reagan for the inflation of Carter years.

Part of the problem is perception and ignorance, the rest is the failure of the GOP to get behind a program to mitigate the effects of the bad policies that came before.

It is things like that which offer solid solutions to real world problems that will get the attention of the young.

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
