Chechnya's New Restrictions On Women's Fashion Are About Control, Not Tradition, Critics Say
November 23, 2025 09:09 CET
By RFE/RL's North Caucasus Service

Summary
Chechnya has banned women's clothing with "masculine elements," citing tradition, but critics argue it is about control.

The ban follows hot on the heels of another recent restriction banning women from going outside without a head scarf.

Observers link these measures to political control under strongman Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov's regime, with critics calling for more focus on women's rights instead.

Chechnya has introduced a new ban for women's fashion that prohibits traditional clothing featuring "masculine elements." While this isn't the first time the Russian republic's authorities have imposed restrictions on women's appearance, observers say the rationale behind the latest rules is about control –- not tradition, as claimed.

Why aren't democrats howling and screaming about women's rights being abused and telling them not to obey illegal human rights laws? *look*

Control? Tradition? Where's the contradiction? In Islam there's a tradition of keeping tight control on women.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.
