Weather hell for 42 million Americans: Snowstorm stretching 1,200 miles to dump up to 18 inches this weekend

Daily Mail
By JAMES GORDON
29 November 2025

A massive winter storm stretching nearly 1,200 miles across the northern United States is plunging 42 million Americans into weather chaos as millions embark on post-Thanksgiving travel on Sunday, one of the busiest travel days of the entire year.

Winter storm warnings and advisories now span from Montana to New York, according to the National Weather Service, as a dangerous cocktail of snow, rain, ice and brutal cold tears across the northern Plains, the Great Lakes and the interior Northeast.

The timing could not be worse. More than 81.8 million people were expected to travel 50 miles or more over the holiday period, according to AAA - and the worst of the storm will now coincide with the massive rush to return-home.

The Transportation Security Administration has already sounded the alarm, saying it expects to screen more than 3 million travelers on Sunday alone.

Adam Stahl, the senior official performing the duties of deputy TSA administrator, warned in a statement: 'We are projecting that the Sunday after Thanksgiving will be one of the busiest travel days in TSA history.'

Airlines are already bracing for impact. Airlines for America predicts US carriers will fly a record 31 million passengers from last Friday through next Monday - just as snow and ice threaten to cripple major hubs.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the TSA has finally returned to full staffing after the government shutdown that previously forced flight reductions - but staffing alone may not be enough to outrun the storm.

The system has already dumped snow across the northern Plains and Great Lakes and continued marching east on Friday. Iowa and Illinois were taking the brunt, with six inches to more than a foot of snow expected in west-central Illinois between Friday night and Saturday night.

Yet another typical, WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!! headline from Daily Mail.
The weather headlines are usually over the top, but I still like the information provided.

Because there's a myriad of sources to view real-time radar and such, it's actually entertaining to see such a popular player report it as Snow-Mageddon.

BTW...pulled up next to a large pickup truck at a signal.  Front passenger tire had no sign of any tread...completely BALD!  How would they expect to control that raised tank on even an inch of snow?

Some of my old STL friends posted pics on Facebook of their 3" or so of snow - pretty impressive, I must say. When I lived there, we always got way more ice than snow.

That's why it's best to avoid going out in snowstorms, even if you got a great vehicle ... no matter how much you prepare, you're still at the mercy of the other unprepared idiots

It looks like the snow will be ending and the rain/sleet begins about 7:30

It's Winter!!! Snow, rain and sleet.  Pretty typical.

Yeah.

We are forced to wear socks down here.

  Nope, no socks for me.  Slippers inside.  Slip on sneakers for the outside.  I even put on long pants and a long sleeved shirt today.  I then put on a hoodie to grocery shop.  The stores are ridiculously freezing.

Chaotic scenes as FORTY-FIVE vehicles crash in huge chain reaction pile-up amid heavy snow

Daily Mail
By JENSEN BIRD
29 November 2025

A nightmare 45-vehicle crash brought traffic to a screeching halt as Indiana drivers made their way home from the holidays in the middle of a snow storm.

Multiple commercial and passenger vehicles were involved in the crash along interstate 70, ten miles from Terre Haute, per NBC Chicago.

Several of the cars slid across the eastbound side to the median, into the grass, and even toward oncoming traffic on the westbound side of the highway.

Much of western Indiana, including Vigo county where the crash occurred, is under a winter weather advisory until 10am Sunday.

The hazardous weather conditions boasted snowfall up to three inches and wind speeds as high as 35 mph, according to the Weather Channel.

Drivers were warned to 'plan on slippery roads.'

'Slow down and use caution while traveling,' read the warning from the weather service.

Indiana State Police announced that the pileup would cause a six hour traffic halt during one of the busiest weekends of the year for travel.

Off topic, but when I saw it was Indiana, it brought to mind Pothole Pete and the realization that I haven’t seen anything about him in the news for a while…..and that’s a good thing.

As far as the mess,  I have never driven in snow and at this stage of my life I don’t want to start. I have however driven in some heavy rain, for SoCal anyway, and the drivers in that are scary enough for me. I can’t imagine being stuck in that with freezing weather, especially if your vehicle was damaged enough so that it can’t provide you with heat.

Always carry a sleeping bag (or two) and a supply of chocolate bars during the winter ... never know when they'll come in handy

I am sitting on the beach in South Florida right now.

Unfortunately, I have to go back to New England on Tuesday, when we are supposed to get hit with the storm. We’re just keeping track of things to see if in fact we can get back home.

Worst case scenario: we have to stay in Florida for another day. Damn.  happy77

Every winter my truck got a 35L backpack stuffed full of MountainHouse (among other things) Enough food to walk out if I needed to.

Didn't have to worry about much else, because winter gear, sleeping gear, tarps, tools, and etc were onboard all the time (It's a mountain truck after all). Added some spares, and counted on natural accumulation to build that inventory.

Tech tip: When you buy a new set of Carhartts, have your old ones professionally cleaned and vacuum sealed = The whole mess of em will fit under your seat. That's where mine lived, all the time. Same with my old mukluks - They just lived behind the seat in the truck. That way I always had em, and they worked as dry spares if I was in my new set.

But you should always, always, always have hard weather gear onboard. Even if you ain't planning on leaving town. If you've ever needed to walk out, you'd understand.

Always bothers me about stack-ups like these... All them woods, on both sides of the road, and not a single fire to be seen. It's SO weird.

If that was Montana, there'd be a camp thrown in about the first 10 minutes. By nightfall there'd be a regular Hell on Wheels, with outfitter tents, communal cook pots, and maybe even a bar with live music.

Everybody that had em would be hopping their cats out of their trucks and running in to town to tell folks we're there, and haul out whatever might be needed.

I've been stuck with folks alongside the road a time or two.
