US Coast Guard Downs 15 Drug Boats In Single Patrol—Largest Cocaine Seizure In History
Story by Ash Frost • 1d

A brisk wind swept across Port Everglades, Florida, as the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Stone docked with a historic cargo: 49,000 pounds of cocaine, valued at $362 million. The offloading operation marked the largest cocaine seizure ever by a single Coast Guard vessel, the result of a sweeping patrol in the eastern Pacific. The sheer volume of contraband underscored the scale of the ongoing fight against transnational drug trafficking, as Coast Guard crews worked methodically to secure the evidence and reflect on the significance of their mission.

Upgraded Tools and Tactics

This unprecedented bust was made possible by recent upgrades to Coast Guard resources. Enhanced cutters, advanced surveillance systems, and improved intelligence-sharing networks have transformed the agency’s ability to intercept drug shipments. During this patrol, these tools enabled the successful interdiction of 15 separate drug boats along high-risk trafficking corridors. The operation demonstrated the effectiveness of new technology and coordinated intelligence in disrupting sophisticated smuggling operations.

Public Health and Security Ripple Effects

The seizure prevented a substantial quantity of cocaine from reaching American communities, delivering a direct blow to the illicit drug supply chain. Public health officials note that such large-scale interdictions may reduce the risk of overdose and limit the availability of dangerous substances on the streets. Shipping companies operating in the eastern Pacific continue to invest in tracking systems and compliance measures to avoid illicit cargo and ensure their shipments remain above suspicion.

This isn't fair of the US.  They're denying some poor drug runners of the ability to feed their families.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
One of the few things I agreed with President Bush the Elder is that he believed in interdiction. The lack of supply raised street drug prices to the point that it priced many users out of the market.
The Republic is lost.

What happens to this stuff after they confiscate it?

I think it should be destroyed immediately.
Then, send the captured miscreants BACK TO the countries they came from.
Then publish their identities and pics in all the local newspapers with pics of the goods "going up in smoke".
And end it with the caption, "hey cartel bosses... look what these guys cost you".

The problem will take care of itself...

The "miscreants" are thrown overboard for target practice/shark bait, whichever works best. The problem is solved without all those other expenses.

The CIA takes control of the contraband and it is resold.  The money is used to cover off book expenses.

Should drop the poison from the air in small doses over China and Iran for the general populism to consume and watch their homeless numbers quadruple.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.

That might seem like a good idea, but I wouldn't wish on anyone what happened on São Miguel in the Azores when hundreds of kilos of coke dumped by a smuggler washed up onshore.
I believe there are non-Muslims still living in Iran who should not be subjected to that.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Do what they do in Singapore.  If you get caught selling drugs they tend to execute you.  It took care of the drug problem.

That was the gist of what I wrote. But your method would entail placing them in holding, feeding and watering them, arranging an execution place and platform, all of which leads to unnecessary expenses, unless you plan a pay-per-view event to recoup the money spent.

Simply tossing them overboard and letting the lads get in a bit of target practice is good foe moral and sharpens their skills, as for the sharks - they have to eat as well - a win-win situation, with little of no expenses and lots of entertainment value.

My understanding was that in Singapore they shot them on the spot. I knew a guy who worked over there in the oil industry, and he said even the roustabouts understood that anything to do with drugs (even possession) was a non-starter.
Some things you just don't mess with.

I wonder what the effect on inner city crime would be if the US had similar policies?

(I know, NOT Constitutional, just musing.)
