Hayli Gubbi volcano (Ethiopia): large explosive eruption, first in volcano's recorded history

At around 08.30 am local time, the Hayli Gubbi volcano, about 15 km SE of the continuously active well-known Erta Ale volcano, erupted explosively generating a large ash plume that rose to approx. 10-15 km and drifted over parts of the southwestern Arabian peninsula.
Satellite data also show a significant plume of sulfur dioxide (SO2) being released by the eruption. Not many other details about the event are so far known as the area is far from inhabited centers and difficult to access. The main source of information is satellite data.
There are no known eruptions on record from the Hayli Gubbi in the past several thousands of years, which could mean it erupted after a potentially very long repose interval; however, records from the Danakil region are often incomplete and geologic studies are very limited due to the remoteness and harsh conditions in one of the most inhospitable areas of the world.
