Life Without Parole: Georgia Man Sentenced For ‘Senseless’ Roadside Execution
Story by Maria Hernandez • 9h
A Georgia jury needed only two hours of deliberation to decide the fate of a man accused of a brutal 2022 roadside killing. Brian Sanchez Duarte, 32, was found guilty of malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony for the death of 22-year-old Alinton Joel Rivera-Zuniga.
Following the verdict, Duarte was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The conviction stems from a violent encounter in Norcross on the morning of November 27, 2022. Rivera-Zuniga was leaving the Alta Gama event hall when he met Duarte and another man, Jose Caraballo-Mendez, who were in a red SUV. Rivera-Zuniga accepted an offer for a ride, a decision that investigators say cost him his life.
During the trial, prosecutors painted a picture of paranoia turning into violence.
