Trump’s border czar calls bishops ‘wrong’ on immigration: ‘Spend time fixing the Catholic Church’

WASHINGTON (OSV News) — The White House “border czar” Tom Homan called the U.S. Catholic bishops “wrong” Nov. 14, two days after the body of bishops in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops voted overwhelmingly to issue a rare group statement voicing “our concern here for immigrants” at their annual fall plenary assembly in Baltimore.

The statement, which the conference approved Nov. 12, did not name President Donald Trump, but it came as a growing number of bishops have acknowledged that some of the Trump administration’s immigration policies risk presenting the church with both practical challenges in administering pastoral support and charitable endeavors, as well as religious liberty challenges.

“We oppose the indiscriminate mass deportation of people. We pray for an end to dehumanizing rhetoric and violence, whether directed at immigrants or at law enforcement,” the bishops’ statement said, adding, “Catholic teaching exhorts nations to recognize the fundamental dignity of all persons, including immigrants. We bishops advocate for a meaningful reform of our nation’s immigration laws and procedures. Human dignity and national security are not in conflict. Both are possible if people of good will work together.”

As a practicing g Catholic, I can say the Bishops are wrong. The liberal wing of the USCCB is not drawing sa difference between legal immigrants and Criminals.

As a practicing Catholic, I agree with you. The bishops are wrong and this pope is too liberal as well.
Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

As a C and E Catholic I agree with my fellow fish eaters sentiments stated above.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
The Bishops and Priests need to set the example of what they preach. Take in and permanently house a few dozen.

But really, render to Caesar what is Caesar's. The church has no right to set national policy. This is the real example right here why we have separation of Church and State.
The Republic is lost.

Separation of Church and State.

The Catholic Bishops are wrong.

If they hadn't facilitated so many clergy molesting and raping so many children and adults, maybe more American Catholics would be filling the pews and the collection boxes.  It was the Bishops' moral failings that damaged attendance and donations.

Bishops, diddling children is bad for business.  Enabling serial child predators to continue diddling children, by re-assigning them so they can diddle again elsewhere, is worse for business.

Grown, educated men in positions of authority failed in their duty to be shepherds of their flocks.  They allowed wolves amongst their midst to prey upon the most innocent and the most vulnerable of lambs.

Former Massachusetts State Attorney General, Tom Reilly, was allegedly about to charge former Archbishop & Cardina, Bernard Law, with child endangerment.  Allegedly, it was this that motivated Cardinal Law to escape to and to hide in the Vatican, which does not have an extradition treaty with the United States.  If I ever got the chance to visit the Vatican, I would make a special effort to p!$$ on Cardinal Law's grave.  It was the lack of goodness, deecency, and moral compass within Cardinal Law that made him so evil, IMHO.

Dear Bishops,

Breaking the law is...breaking the law. If you want to support these people, support them in their home countries. I hate your attendance is down but this ain't the way to increase it.

Actually wit the new AMERICAN Pope there has been an increase in Church attendance. I do not know if this is a temporary increase, or how long it will last, but the parishes around here have all seen an increase of 10-15%.

The bishops are wrong. Reasonable law, reasonably applied under the circumstances.  Thomas Aquinas advised that it was a moral obligation from God to obey such laws, so the bishops are both committing a fallacy and acting knowingly sinfully.
