"Unique" weather warning for winter as La Nina, Polar Vortex dance
Story by Amanda Greenwood

Meteorologists warn that an “extraordinary and unique” atmospheric event could reshape the 2025-2026 winter outlook. A rare, possible disruption of the polar vortex—which determines how cold it gets—or strengthening La Nina conditions—which influence where cold air travels—may significantly alter typical U.S. winter weather patterns, potentially leading to colder and snowier conditions than usual.

Why It Matters
A disruption of the polar vortex could send a blast of cold, arctic air into parts of the U.S., which may lead to below-average temperatures, heavy snow, and potentially dangerous wintry conditions, starting earlier than usual in December and lasting longer than normal, until January.

What To Know
According to meteorologists and climatologists, critical changes in two major atmospheric patterns—La Nina and the polar vortex—have put the U.S. at a possible “fork in the road” that will decide how the 2025-2026 winter unfolds.

One scenario predicts that a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW)—a rare shift in temperature, high above the North Pole—could disrupt the polar vortex, which normally keeps frigid Arctic air confined to the region. As a result, the disturbed polar vortex may push cold air further south, into the U.S., potentially blanketing parts of the nation with extended cold and snowy conditions, starting in December and lasting through to January.

I've lived in Michigan for 78 years and, to me, this doesn't sound much different than any other winter forecast. **nononono*

They sure do their very best to describe normal winter weather in the most sensationalist way.

Ah ... Michigan.  I lived there for many years. Northern Michigan at least  when I lived there was absolutely beautiful and the Great Lakes are something to behold.  The weather can be unpredictable sometimes with lots of clouds and rain with usually short summers and winters can be brutally cold.

You are right; winter is winter and a typical Michigan winter consists of cold temperatures, snow and sometimes freezing rain.

I have to laugh at the weathermen; yep, it's either cold, warm, or hot and it's either windy, calm, raining, snowy or sunny.  I can peek my head outside and predict the weather just like they do. You dress and prepare accordingly.  All these fancy words that they now apply to the weather; polar vortex, La Nina, atmospheric event, etc., give me a chuckle.

Why an unusual phenomenon will cause a frigid December in the U.S.

Archive Today

A sudden stratospheric warming could soon disturb the polar vortex. Why that will cause frigid air to spill from the North Pole to North America.

December might be extra chilly this year across parts of the United States this year because of a weather phenomenon unfolding miles above the North Pole.

It’s called sudden stratospheric warming and happens once every other winter on average, but very rarely in November. Despite the name, its occurrence does not imply there will be any sudden warming where people live. In fact, it’s almost the opposite.

A rapid warming and weakening of winds in the stratosphere can disturb the polar vortex, a ring of frigid, stormy air that typically sits high above the North Pole.
Impacts can cascade downward through the atmosphere, sometimes causing very cold air to spill southward toward more populated areas, as the polar vortex becomes displaced or elongated.

This process can take weeks to unfold, but long-range forecasts favor below-average temperatures across parts of 35 states from late November into December, particularly after Thanksgiving.

How and why it happens

Sudden stratospheric warming events are natural phenomena, happening once every other winter on average.

But major events in November are very uncommon, with only one occurring since the 1950s — and the one predicted this November may become the earliest on record. They more typically occur in January and February and not in November or December. That’s because the polar vortex is still in its formative stages during late fall and early winter, making it less susceptible to warming events.

Never trust a forcater that is wrong 30% of the time and claims he is a scientist.
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

Scientists get things wrong all the time. It's how we learn, how we test ideas and refine them. If you can't admit when you're wrong, you'll never learn anything.

But I have always wondered what it would be like to have a job where you are wrong as often as a weatherman and still have a job and a paycheck in the morning.

Education.

30% of students fail every year, yet every teacher keeps their job.

Like Adm. Hyman Rickover pointed out in the 1950s, "Would you buy a car from a company whose products failed 30% of the time? Would you fly in planes that crashed 30% of the time? Of course not, yet in the education system, this failure rate is normal and accepted ..."

I hope the woolly worm forecast is the accurate one. All that I've seen are mostly brown, which is supposed to indicate a mild winter.
Fingers crossed.
