This happened with a small 4-seater plane at the small airport in my small hometown when I was a kid.  The pilot, who had one flight lesson before he pilfered the plane, was killed when he encountered an oak tree after overshooting the runway by about a mile.  He was about 19, IIRC.   :shrug:
