Omaha Steaks CEO warns American families will soon face '$10-a-pound reality' for beef
US beef industry may see record-high prices by third quarter of 2026, says Nate Rempe

America’s beef bills are set to keep climbing, according to Omaha Steaks President and CEO Nate Rempe, who cautioned that the nation’s shrinking cattle supply and record demand are driving a "$10-a-pound reality" that could stretch family budgets for years.

"Look, domestically, we need to get our arms around it. Last time we got together, we talked about how the herd is at a 70-year low, demand is at an all-time high and the net result is prices are through the roof," Rempe told "Mornings with Maria" on Friday.

"We are headed for what I'm calling … the $10-a-pound reality. By [the] third quarter of '26, families are gonna see $10 a pound [for] ground beef in the grocery store. So we're in for a bit of a haul here," he continued. "I don't believe we'll see price come down in any meaningful way until sometime in 2027."

"And it's gonna be tough on families. I mean, that's gonna be quite a shock."

We're already paying $10.99/lb for Angus ground sirloin beef!!  I buy packages that are a little over a lb. and it lasts the two of us a couple of meals.  Ground chuck is cheaper and that what we use for burgers but I have to watch the fat content.  If we want burgers we splurge and do carry out at our local burger shop.  That's becoming more and more unaffordable though.

I'm very thankful that we are able to put food on the table.  Thank you sweet Jesus!

Importing beef....I'm not exactly thrilled with that idea.  What kind of beef would they be importing and would it at least be USDA inspected or USDA choice beef???

Our local Winn Dixie is selling beef that is imported but nowhere in their ads do they mention that it's USDA inspected., nor does a picture of the beef have a USDA inspected label. No thank you.

Sure it's consumer's choice BUT who knows what the cattle or fed and how they are processed. I believe meat prices in general have been inflated; especially beef.  People shouldn't be made to eat crappy meat because better cuts or quality are unaffordable.  No way can we afford filet mignons or rib-eyes like we used to just a few years ago - we used to pay $9.99/lb for filets on sale and thought that was pricey but a bargain.  We won't see prices like that again. 

I truly feel for those who have kiddos to feed, rent or mortgage to pay, car payments, utilities, etc.  How on earth are they surviving?  Fresh fruit and vegetables are pretty darn pricey as well, so even going vegan is expensive.

Even with both parents working for many it would be a struggle and a tremendous weight on their shoulders.    Heck, even beef hot dogs are around $6.00/pkg and a can of beans is around $2.00. 

I noticed that this year that the local Salvation Army has raised their suggested starting donation from $50.00 - $80.00.  Everyone is feeling the pinch.

Being somewhat of a skeptic...this comes from Omaha Steaks. It may/may not be a good prediction. They are expensive, at best and I don't think their meat is worth the cost of their price. Maybe they are setting the stage for a huge future increase on their products?

Agreed. We've received their product as a gift a few times, and didn't really see what was special about it.

I buy my meat at Market Basket. IMO you cannot tell the difference between it and grass fed or whatever.

Omaha Steaks have now priced themselves out of our budget. We still have a couple of Omaha sirloin cap roasts left in the freezer and we'll have one for Christmas dinner (cooked right, they taste similar to prime rib).  In the past our financial advisor has sent us an Omaha Steak gift card for Christmas and if he is kind enough to send us one this year, we'll get a couple of things and that will be about it for purchasing from them.

They have never been in my budget but then I live right in the middle of beef country some of which may well find its way to Omaha.

The beef we eat here is all processed locally and I don't know how much involvement the USDA has with those small shops. I'm sure it's some but I never pay any attention to it because I generally know exactly where the beef we eat came from and how it was handled cradle to table.

A hunting/fishing store in my town sells frozen beef from producers no more than 25 miles away. I'm sure it's a little more pricey than Kroger, but probably much tastier. I plan to get some at the earliest opportunity.

The prices of steaks anywhere is ridiculous. Yes, my jaw dropped when I saw the price of Kansas City steaks.  Honestly, I used to prefer their steaks over Omaha, but last time I ordered from them I was really disappointed.  Just like Omaha you have to buy something else in order to get the supposed sale price of an item. The total adds up quickly. Both steak companies get you coming and going. 

So far, Jerry's on Sanibel Island has the best quality of meat (certified Black Angus) for the price. It's just a matter of making it out there -- We used to go there every month and have lunch and buy our meat, but it Ian put a damper on that and now I forget about going there.

I recall cans of corned beef from Argentina from when I was a kid. We import from Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, too.

It was not so many years ago that live lobster was many dollars more than prime cuts of beef like filet mignon and NY Strip. Now that has reversed. So if the price of beef goes much higher, I'll switch to the cheaper live lobster.

Their bacon wrapped filet mignon is the same thing I can buy prepackaged in the grocery store for $5. Omaha Steaks are overpriced for what you get, and I dislike having to take an item I do not want just to get the items I do want. So no more and same for the other companies selling beef on line.

I bought a quarter of beef at a local meat packers for $1250 I got steaks, stew meat, roasts, and about 50% low fat (90% lean) burger. ~120 lbs total, but between the quality, locally grown beef, that it was well packaged (vacuum packed, not paper wrapped), and as requested, frozen solid, I'm happy with the deal. Roasts were cut to the size I wanted, as were the steaks.

Or buy bulk and cut your own. New York strip loin on sale for 9.95, bought the whole loin, cut it into steaks myself (not hard). Yield: 11 1 1/4 inch thick steaks (just right for grilling) and about a pound of stew meat (cut up the ends).

I buy other meats on sale: whole pork loins, cut them into roasts or chops. All you need is a sharp knife and a little time and counter space (and a vacuum sealer helps). Those came out to $2 and change a pound.

I have a freezer loaded with Walleye fillets (I caught them, filleted them, packaged them at home), and watch sales for chicken cheap.

Are you deliberately trying to be obtuse? There are other forms of edible meat, and other more direct ways to buy beef than thru the supermarket, and plenty of wild critters out there for the taking.

It's just a matter of will and effort, no one is entitled to walk in to a grocery store and get cheap beef.

Actually, it was just a quarter, not the whole side. If you look at cattle auction prices, you'll see they are up. That's just because the demand outstrips the supply.

If you can't buy your own feeder calf and fatten it up, you are either going to a place where they process beef (we have three in town) or are at the mercy of the grocery stores.

As for hunting, it isn't for everyone, granted. But people seem to lose track of the fact that the deer/elk/moose in your neighbor's freezer takes some of the pressure off the beef/pork/lamb market.  Then there's fishing. Not expensive to get started unless you want designer gear, and a protein source (although it can help to have a friend with a boat...)

It isn't the tariff policy that is the biggest driver of beef prices right now, it's a dry spell in the Southwest that led to herds being reduced in size. Biden Era policies in regards to grazing leases and water access didn't help, either.
Where did you think the relatively cheap hamburger came from a couple of years ago? (More supply than demand).
 
Now the herd sizes are down, heifers are being retained for breeding to build the herds, and the steers are going to market. That means less supply than demand, which means prices at auction will be higher as the slaughterhouses and feedlots bid on the cattle.

It really is that simple.

We bought Omaha Steaks, one of their packages, the chicken was tough, the franks so so, and the steaks nothing special. I could buy better for less at the local grocery store butcher shop. Never again is what we decided.
