Arctic blast to freeze 155 million Americans with temperatures plunging to 15°F

More than 155 million Americans are under weather alerts Monday as an Arctic blast sweeps from the Midwest to the Northeast.

Meteorologists warned that the lowest temperatures will hit parts of North Dakota, Minnesota, Wyoming and West Virginia, where the low could reach 15°F this week.

Several cities could break daily cold records, including Huntsville, Alabama, with 43°F and Macon, Georgia, with 49°F.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued freeze watches as far south as Alabama's Gulf Coast, where temperatures could fall below 34°F, killing crops and damaging unprotected pipes.

Even the Carolinas and central Florida are not escaping the chill, with Charleston struggling to reach 50°F, about 20 degrees below average, while parts of Florida will barely make it into the 60s.

Morning lows could plunge into the 20s as far south as the Florida and Alabama Gulf Coast, with some 30s in northern and central Florida by Tuesday, bringing a widespread freeze across the Deep South.

Matt Devitt, chief meteorologist at WINK News, warned parts of Florida could get so cold on Monday that local iguanas could start falling out of trees, paralyzed by the freezing temperatures.

'The iguanas are not dead, just temporarily stunned and immobilized from the cold...especially if it drops below 45°. Only in Florida!' Devitt posted on X.

15 degrees is hardly an 'arctic blast'.
That's still t-shirt weather.

Seeing as how you are talking to a trapper, who spent most winters slogging through freeeeezing water minding beaver trap lays... yeah.

Once it actually gets cold enough to freeze the waterways hard enough, then you switch out to martin trapping, and snow shoes. Then it's cold.

Will this affect orange crops this time of year?

I read your posts (and others) this time of year and they cut me to the bone  :terror: ...and make me ashamed of myself. It's not even  "really" cold here. But I did turn on the furnace the morning and have left it on all day.  Very unusual for me. I just don't hold up to the cold like I used to. Heck, I might even start a fire tonight. Of course it will be back up to the low 80's toward the end of the week!  :0012:

When I lived in AK we'd run out in the freezing weather and jump into the hot springs and go swimming.  Getting out of the springs was a pain but the cabins were all heated by the hot springs so once you got inside the place was nice and toasty.
Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Don't feel down about it. If I was down there by you in the summertime, I would die. So it's all relative.

We normally get maybe two weeks of triple digits here, and I guarantee I am either sitting in a lake or hiding in the AC the whole dang time. And even at that, I will still have 40s and 50s at night...

If I could still mind it, you can pretty much open the windows at night for the cold air, and close it up in the day, and you really don't even need air conditioning here in the summer. I lived most of my life with no AC, only investing in it once the fires started getting bad- And that was because I couldn't let the smoke in... But you will need heat in the winter.

So different strokes... And that's alright. You desert rats would be perfectly fine in heat that would make me puke.

One of the biggest dilemmas about being up in the bush in the winter time, is that sooner or later, you WILL have to jump in a creek and take a bath.

You'll put it off, I guarantee, until you start getting rashes, and you cannot stand your own stink... But you'll have to do it, before you're done.

4ft of snow, and you have to dig down to where you can get back out of the creek,  and have a big ol fire ready... Then you jump in and soap up as fast as you can, jump out and get in front of that fire before you start freezing up.... Hair, eyelashes, and beard frost up immediately... where the water don't sheet off freezes right on you.

And that's the best fire you will ever know.

It isn't cold until the snow makes squeeching noises when you walk in it.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

I Skied Down Mount Everest (world first, no oxygen)

5,424,505 views  Nov 7, 2025  MOUNT EVEREST
Ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel becomes the first person to climb Mount Everest and ski back to Everest Base Camp without supplementary oxygen. After nearly 16 hours climbing in the high altitude “death zone” (above 8,000m where oxygen levels are dangerously low), Bargiel clipped into his skis on the summit of the tallest mountain on earth and started his descent via the South Col Route. He reached Camp II that night and rested - the summit ridge and Hillary Step had taken longer than planned, meaning darkness made it dangerous and difficult to navigate further that day. The next morning, he skied through the treacherous Khumbu Icefall - guided by a drone flown by his brother, Bartek - before safely arriving at Base Camp to become the first person to ascend and descend Mount Everest on skis with no supplementary oxygen.

Pretty wild.

Actually, I'm no skier. Darned things have a tendency to cross each other when I wear them.

I used to could ski... But I didn't do it much.  It was always about cartage, and dragging a pulk behind you on x-country skis is no where near as functional as snowshoes. Especially since the pulk negates speed on the skis with any reasonable weight in it. Particularly uphill. Downhill it tries to run you over.

If you want to get there fast, with nothing more than you can fit in a 35L pack, skis will work. But I never go anywhere in the winter with nothing but 35L. Hell, my sleep system alone won't fit in that little bit. Overnight in cold weather, you'd better be on a snow machine or dragging a pulk (or a snow machine dragging a pulk), or you're just gonna die.
