Multiple Dems Will Vote To Reopen Government As Early As Sunday

Trending Politics News
By Cullen McCue
November 9, 2025

A handful of Senate Democrats indicated on Sunday that they are willing to advance a package of bills that could end the ongoing government shutdown within 24 hours, multiple sources familiar with the matter told Axios.

At least 10 Senate Democrats are expected to support a procedural motion to advance a package of spending bills and a short term funding measure through the end of January, multiple sources from both parties told the outlet. The deal would include a vote next month on a motion to extend Obama-era Affordable Care Act (ACA) credits for one year, which would take 60 votes in the upper chamber in order to pass.

In addition, the agreement is expected to include language that would undo the federal layoffs that President Trump introduced during the shutdown.

As of Sunday afternoon, talks remain dynamic and a final agreement between the two parties has not been reached. Discussions have moved towards the most productive line of discussion yet, however, as lawmakers seek to bring an end to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Senators are currently in Washington for a rare weekend session, and are on track to vote Sunday on a procedural motion and a government funding package. Lawmakers who left town have been asked to return immediately Sunday, indicating that a vote is likely on schedule.

In addition, the long-awaited text of the three appropriations bills that lawmakers hope to include in the deal was released Sunday afternoon.

If successful, a vote Sunday would bring an end to what has turned into the longest government shutdown in U.S. history at 39 days. Senate Democrats have voted against a temporary funding measure, known as a continuing resolution (CR) that would fund the government through late November more than a dozen times.

Excerpt:
You know, after 40 days of this ridiculous Schumer Shutdown that’s crippled airlines with over 2,500 canceled flights this weekend alone, it looks like we might finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. The Senate’s set to vote this evening, between 6-8pm Eastern, on a package to reopen the government, and it’s got bipartisan backing with at least 10 Democrats expected to jump ship and support it. Axios reports the deal includes a promised December vote on extending Obamacare tax credits for one year—at a 60-vote threshold for passage.

All that for what the GOP put on the table 7 weeks ago. Dems for the loss.

Senate Democrats, Republicans reach deal to reopen government
Senate Republicans unveil three-bill minibus in bid to reopen the government
By Alex Miller , Chad Pergram Fox News
Published November 9, 2025 3:12pm EST | Updated November 9, 2025 7:22pm EST

There are now enough Senate Democrats willing to back a revamped plan to reopen the government.

A source familiar with the newly-unveiled plan told Fox News Digital that there are enough Senate Democrats ready to join Republicans for a key vote Sunday night as Congress readies to reopen the government.

The latest development comes after an updated continuing resolution was revealed that would reopen the government until Jan. 30, 2026, reverse firings of furloughed workers carried out by the Trump administration and ensure that furloughed workers get back pay.

Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins, R-Maine, led the bipartisan deal, but a trio of Democratic caucus members, Sens. Angus King, I-Maine, Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., proved crucial in striking a way forward.

Lawmakers are expected to take the first of a trio of votes on reopening the government later Sunday night. But it will require action from the House before the closure is officially ended.

Earlier in the day, Senate Republicans unveiled another crucial piece of the puzzle in their bid to reopen the government and plan to plow ahead with a vote on Sunday.

While both sides still appear at an impasse on extending expiring Obamacare subsidies, appropriators moved ahead with a package of spending bills that Republicans hope will jumpstart the government funding process, and lead to an end to the 40-day government shutdown.

The Senate Appropriations Committee released the three-bill spending package, known as a minibus, Sunday afternoon. Lawmakers are still waiting on text for an updated continuing resolution (CR), that, if passed, is expected to reopen the government until late January.

It includes legislation that would fund military construction and the VA, the legislative branch and agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration.

That was exactly my first thought and what could possibly go wrong with Collins leading the 'bipartisan deal'? Somehow I get the feeling that the deal pivoted towards the DEMS.
Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

10 thoughts on the shutdown. But, really, you don't have to reads these. there's a lot of takes out there.

1. Dems clearly lost on their main objectives: extending subsidies+ ending rescissions. Can't spin that
2. Dems run real risk of depressing a base that just began to think they were fighting/had a winning hand
3. Dems succeeded in elevating health care as a salient issue.
4. Trump does now take ownership/heat for premium hikes to come
5. Hostage taking works. Especially around SNAP and flights. Lawmakers got spooked.
6. It's not the worst thing in the world so try and save hostages!
7. But it doesn't bode well for future shutdown fights (and there will be more) that Republicans know they can do this.
8. And yet.... Dems have apparently removed SNAP as a hostage for any future shutdown fight (not insignificant)
9. Dems believe that RIFs are now off table. The CR language forbids them (and if they extend the CR, they will remain forbidden). Plus, judges have ruled you can't RIF during a shutdown (should we end up back in one).
9a. Trump will surely challenge this.
10. Almost all of this won't impact the midterms. At this point in the 2013 shutdown people were convinced Republicans had just screwed themselves. Within days everyone was talking about a failed website launch related to the health care law whose subsidies we just waged a shutdown over.

Schumer Shutdown Ending

J.D. Rucker  •  Nov. 9, 2025

BREAKING: Eight Democratic senators have voted YES on the procedural vote for the continuing resolution, securing the 60-vote supermajority needed to break the filibuster and advance efforts to end the government shutdown.

Democrat YES Votes:
Sen. Dick Durbin (IL)
Sen. Maggie Hassan (NH)
Sen. Tim Kaine (VA)
Sen. Angus King (I-ME)
Sen. Cortez Masto (NV)
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (NH)
Sen. Jacky Rosen (NV)
Sen. John Fetterman (PA)

The agreement, hammered out by Republicans and a handful of Democrats, centers on a revamped continuing resolution to fund operations through January 30, 2026, while undoing firings of furloughed employees ordered by the Trump administration and guaranteeing back pay for those affected.  .  .

https://thelibertydaily.com/schumer-shutdown-ending/

Hell, no!  You gave non-essential workers a paid vacation while forcing essential workers to work.  Non-essential workers get rewarded.  The ones who actually showed up get nothing more than what they worked for.  What utter bullshit!

Furloughed workers don't get paid.  Period.  What is so difficult about that?  Why are they rewarding the parts of government we don't need?

Ah, but there's more:

Quote
The shutdown dragged on amid Democratic insistence on extending expiring Obamacare subsidies, a demand that stalled progress for weeks. Republicans have pledged a separate vote on those subsidies once the government reopens, tentatively scheduled for the second week of December.

Translation:  Democrats have already secured the votes of thirteen Republican Senators to vote for cloture on the Obamacare subsidy resolution, and four of those thirteen GOP Senators will be voting with the Democrats to extend those subsidied.

And in November, Republicans will lose the Senate because they offered no alternative to Democrat rule.

Democrats Cave on Government Funding, Will Receive Nothing for Ending Schumer Shutdown

A disastrous shutdown for Democrats got worse Sunday when Senate Democrats folded on government funding while receiving nothing of substance in return.

Hakeem Jeffries, Progressive Dems Rage Against Deal To End Shutdown

Adam Pack
Reporter

Font Size:

While a number of Democratic lawmakers are voicing their support for a new bipartisan deal to bring the 40-day federal government shutdown to an end, members of the party’s left-flank are furious about the proposed agreement.

Progressive Democratic lawmakers and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries excoriated a deal Sunday negotiated by fellow members of their party to reopen the government, citing their fear Democrats are going to cave without winning any substantive concessions in the shutdown fight. The group of Democrats argued their party should withhold their votes until Republicans agree to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies.

“We will not support spending legislation advanced by Senate Republicans that fails to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits,” Jeffries wrote on X. “We will fight the GOP bill in the House of Representatives,” the minority leader added.

The minority leader did not mention that eight Senate Democrats would have to vote “yes” on the spending bills to send the legislation to the House. Just three members of the Democratic caucus have voted to advance a stopgap spending bill since the beginning of the record-breaking shutdown; adding their support to that of 52 Senate Republicans, however, falls short of the upper chamber’s 60-vote threshold for legislation.

It is a wondrous thing to see Democrats finally caving - on anything

And assuming that they do, the Republicans need to make sure to never stop reminding the public who was to blame.
"If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people."    -Calvin Coolidge

At first, I thought it crazy that Turban Dick Durbin broke ranks but then I again realized it is all a political calculus. If they needed 15 to break ranks, they would have found 15.

I think the only reason the Rats broke ranks was because SNAP benefits were not going to be paid. The Rats never cared about federal employees because they knew they would get back pay and rehired. The big key was Pres. Trump holding the line and not caving into a key Rat voting base.

If the Rat's win on the obamacare subsidies it will continue the process towards single payer.

I think that it was the airline cancellations in general, and private jets restrictions, more than anything, that caused them to fold.

I took a deep dive into this deal, and it truly looks like the Democrats are getting nothing but pain.  Everybody is pissed at Schumer and the 8 defectors and it is glorious to behold.

This is the deal that they got from Thune:

I keep getting reports and reading articles claiming, "The shutdown is over!"
These are all false reports. The government is still as it was. These reports are premature.

The shutdown will not end until the House votes. Hopefully that will happen today.

I hear later this week.  The Senate still hasn't voted on the modified CR, they just voted yesterday to end the Filibuster.  If the House passes the modified CR then it goes to Trump.

That's exactly what this was. They got what they wanted, victory on November 5, so further grandstanding achieves nothing.

Note that most, if not all, of the Senators who voted for cloture are not up for re-election in 2026.

And if the President signs it. Which, given that it pays for work not done, I hope he doesn't.

Exclusive: Sen. Cotton Calls Schumer a ‘Disgrace’ for Prolonging Shutdown to Feed His ‘Deranged Hatred’ of Trump

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) called Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) a “disgrace” after enough Senate Democrats defected to vote for a procedural vote to allow a continuing resolution (CR) funding the government to advance, accusing him of dragging out the shutdown to feed his “deranged hatred” for President Donald Trump.

‘Stand Up to Trumpism’: Bernie Sanders Attacks Eight Senate Democrats Who Voted to End Government Shutdown

Sen. Bernie Sanders attacked eight Democrats’ “very, very bad vote” to start reopening the government, claiming the recent elections served as a mandate for Democrats to stand up to “Trumpism.”

I wondered about that. I figured there had to be an angle.
