Scott Jennings Says What We’re All Thinking (Or Should Be) About Democrats’ Victories

Democrats dominated election night Tuesday, but conservative CNN analyst Scott Jennings made several important points that ultimately deflate the victories.

The first is that the Virginia gubernatorial race, which saw Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle Sears, was never a campaign that Republicans had much confidence in. Virginia is also a swing state, and New Jersey, where Democratic New Jersey Rep. Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli, has been solidly blue for a long time.

“These are blue states, and Democrats were supposed to win, so I wouldn’t overread it. Virginia, in particular, has never been a great bellwether,” Jennings argued. “I don’t think a lot of folks had a lot of confidence in the Virginia campaign that was run on the Republican side and New Jersey is New Jersey, so I would hesitate to overread it.”

The second is that, in the long run, the victorious Mamdani and Jay Jones, who was elected attorney general of Virginia even after it became public he fantasized about killing his political opponents, will damage the Democratic Party’s image and hurt their chances in the midterms. Jennings also suggested that these victories will give Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, a left-winger, more momentum going into his primary next year against Janet Mills, the state’s Democratic governor.
