UK Islamic media outlet 5 Pillars reported on Muslim community mobilization for New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, covering a Muslim and South Asian Rally and Canvass with Mamdani and Congressman Ro Khanna on November 1, 2025. Abdullah Akl of Within Our Lifetime and advocacy director of MAS Staten Island Center, said that Islamophobia has been rising in conjunction with Mamdani's increase in the polls. An unnamed female Muslim activist for Mamdani stated that being anti-Zionist is not the same as antisemitism, adding: "I think a lot of people don't understand what that means. They don't know what antisemitism is." Farhana Islam of Muslims for Progress addressed claims that Mamdani would enforce sharia law in NYC, saying that she would think twice before believing sources that support a "genocidal entity."
Robert Carter, a Muslim journalist with 5 Pillars reporting from the rally, said that the Muslim vote could play a significant role in Mamdani's election. Juhaib Choudhury, co-founder of Muslim Community Forum, added that if 75% of New York's Muslim community voted, "we would be coasting," and they would be at their feet looking for real ways to serve the community beyond symbolic gestures. He said: "That is the power of the Muslim vote." Rally goers chanted: "Allah Akbar!" Robert Carter, a Muslim journalist with 5 Pillars, reported from the rally.
Akl, has repeatedly organized rallies celebrating the October 7 attack and other pro-Palestinian causes, and has appeared alongside Hamas and Hizbullah imagery and insignia.
