WASHINGTON -- WASHINGTON (AP) — In the midst of a federal government shutdown, the U.S. government’s gross national debt surpassed $38 trillion Wednesday, a record number that highlights the accelerating accumulation of debt on America’s balance sheet.

It's also the fastest accumulation of a trillion dollars in debt outside of the COVID-19 pandemic — the U.S. hit $37 trillion in gross national debt in August this year.

This is with a GOP Congress and a GOP  president. What is it going to  be after next year’s midterms if and when the Democrats control  Congress?

Slowing hiring and rising prices with the debt still growing well past hundred percent of GDP very rapidly.

It seems the only scenario that at least slows slightly our precarious debt situation is with a democrat president and a republican Congress

What would our national debt look like, for example, if Bill Clinton had a democrat Congress or Barack Obama had a Democrat Congress their whole terms?

Democrats credit Bill Clinton for the balanced budget in the 90s, but he would’ve never done that without the Republicans controlling Congress after 94 elections

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
And while we need to deal with the deep state bureaucracy for it's predatory nature, the only way to start reducing it is taking on entitlements, especially welfare.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.

Welfare, yes, but especially all the handouts to, and expenses of, dealing with some 10% of the people in country being here illegally.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
