USDA says SNAP benefits to be cut off due to Democrat shutdown: ‘The well has run dry’

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said that federal food assistance benefits will be cut off as a result of the government shutdown, which has now dragged on for 26 days with no end in sight, as Democrat senators refuse to budge.

In an announcement posted to the department’s website over the weekend, the USDA didn’t mince words in laying the blame for tens of millions of people who will soon go hungry directly at the feet of the recalcitrant party, which continues to refuse to vote to fund the government unless Republicans bow to their extortion.

“Senate Democrats have now voted 12 times to not fund the food stamp program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Bottom line, the well has run dry. At this time, there will be no benefits issued on November 01,” the announcement reads.

All this talk of SNAP brings to mind the memories my mother shared of living through the Great Depression. Her family had a single wage-earner (who had lost his job when a Democrat administration assumed power in their county and fired known Republicans), four children, no food stamps, and they accepted no charity. Saltines with milk was a real treat, and sometimes dinner consisted of popcorn.

During the Reagan era, I had an acquaintance who was allotted so much money a month for food and they also handed out blocks of cheese and bread.  Enough cheese and bread to make sandwiches and she used to by cans of soup and cereal.  It was food on the table. She also received reduced rent and utilities. In order to qualify she was on a work training program to learn a skill to become fully employed.  It worked well.  Once she was fully employed she no longer qualified for government assistance and she was able to support her and her daughter with her new job.

So how about training people for jobs?  Problems that I foresee are the sky high cost of rent and utilities.

For example, did you know that the average EBT recipient spends MORE on non-essential food items than the average person who pays for his own groceries? The people who are funding the program are living more modestly than the people who are on the program. Absolutely outrageous and disgusting.

Well, of course. When I was poor and struggling (but buying my own groceries), my refrigerator usually had nothing in it but eggs, cheese, a loaf of bread, and a 2 liter bottle of Diet Coke, because I wanted to make sure the rent, utilities, gasoline, etc., would be covered that month. Silly me.

You're right. They have the votes, and they have the votes to override the Democrats' efforts to block it. But they refuse to use the procedural maneuvers that would do that.

Somehow, back in 2013 when Ted Cruz used this tactic, Republicans got blamed, but in 2025 when the Democrats are using the same tactic, SOMEHOW THE REPUBLICANS ARE STILL GETTING BLAMED. It's a rigged system. And the media is constantly giving conservatism the shaft.

There aren't enough Ellisons to clean up the mess where we always seem to lose the public fight. Our nation is addicted to the dole and quite frankly, if the Republicans aren't going to force their hand, they're useless.

The SNAP (food stamps) program is in the news again because the program will likely be frozen on November 1 due to the government shutdown. An estimated 40+ million people will be affected.

I say “again” because SNAP was the subject of much discussion between politically progressive and conservative Christians over the summer when the One Big Beautiful Bill was passed with substantial cuts to the program. The claim from progressives was that it was inherently unbiblical and unjust to take these benefits away from the poor.

I wrote an article at the time called, “The One Big Beautiful Bill Isn’t as Unchristian as Everyone Seems to Think.” I’ll link to it in the comments if you’d like my lengthy thoughts on the subject. But with respect to current SNAP freeze and millions being affected, I want to say two things.

First (and I elaborate on this in the article), it simply isn’t inherently unjust to take government benefits away from people in need. It may sound callous to say as much, but consider the implication of the presupposition that it IS inherently unjust. That would mean that no matter how financially imprudent it might be for the government to begin offering a good in the first place, it’s always morally wrong to later take it away.

Yet there are numerous ways people are adversely affected by out-of-control government debt—higher interest rates, inflation, economic instability, and much more. Adding a social program isn’t an act of justice simply by virtue of the fact it will benefit some group of people; it could end up hurting more people than it helps given the longer term impact on the economy. And if a nation is held to the standard that it’s always morally wrong to take something away once it’s been given in the first place, it can never rectify poor decisions of the past without people claiming injustice.

Second, all of that said, those (like me) who believe that it’s not morally problematic to execute cuts to SNAP should recognize that there will be a difficult transition period for people who came to depend on SNAP in the first place—this is true in the longer term implementation of the OBBB but especially so when benefits are unexpectedly suddenly frozen as in the current scenario. In other words, you can believe that certain types of government dependence are problematic while acknowledging that people will need help becoming less dependent.

It’s a great time for the local church to consider how to help bridge that gap for families who will be making the transition.

Massachusetts has a $8 Billion 'rainy day fund' they could use to supplement missed SNAP payments, but they won't.

The Dem playbook is for orphans, widows, and veterans to starve in the street so they can place Dem righteous indignatious blame on Republicans.

The Dem Governor of Massachusetts could help feed its SNAP recipients, but she chooses not to.  She's sticking to the DNC playbook.

If Mass has a $8 Billion 'rainy day' fund, that's $8 Billion Mass doesn't need from the Federal Government.  Where did that money come from?  Covid Relief?  The Inflation (Non-)Reduction Act?

SNAP needs to be independently audited.  Anyone in violation of Federal Immigration Law should not be eligible for benefits.

Dems are using state governments to launder Federal monies to illegal criminal alien 2030 Census apportionment placeholders.

SNAP should re-imburse states 75% - 95% for monies used to feed the poor who are not illegal criminal alien 2030 Census placeholders.  The Feds should not be paying 100% upfront.  The states will abuse it as 'free money'.  The state governments need to have some skin in the game.

1/6 people in Massachusetts shouldn't be so poor as to qualify for food stamps.  That seems too large and too generous.  If I am wrong, Mass need to work on its affordability crisis.

That's just it.  Republicans ARE forcing their hand.  For the first time in a very very long time, Republicans are sticking to their guns.  They are on the winning side of this issue no matter what the Democrats decide to do.  And they need to hold their ground.  This is on the Democrats.   They own it.  And Republicans do NOT need to bail them out here.  The Dems have a choice.  Either eat crow and pass the CR, or go without any political funding.

As for the American people, we finally get to see firsthand what a bunch of liars the Democrats are.  We also get to see that shutting down the government has not caused the catastrophe that Democrats had led us to believe.  It turns out that cutting food stamps for a bunch of illegals really isn't that bad after all.  And realizing that furloughing workers at the Department of Education or HHS has zero impact on the average American's life.

I hope the government remains 'shut down' at least through the end of 2026.  The Treasury will be looking fat with a huge surplus by then.  Maybe we can pay down some debt instead.
