ICE Arrests 800 in Major Illinois Sweep
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol have reportedly arrested over 800 people in Illinois under Operation Midway Blitz. Community leaders from Bright Star Church criticized arrests outside their shelter without notice and raised concerns about federal enforcement methods. The operation has targeted illegal immigrants perceived as violent threats, including many with serious criminal convictions.
Bright Star pastor Chris Harris stated, “What they’ve portrayed is not really how things are being executed, and if what they’re saying is true, there’s a way to do it with peace and dignity.”
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, “The Trump Administration will not allow violent criminals or repeat offenders to terrorize our neighborhoods or victimize our children and innocent Americans.”
Community leaders claimed the arrests have created fear among vulnerable shelter populations. Gov. JB Pritzker criticized the operations, arguing they do not improve public safety.
Bright Star Community Development Corporation executive director Caryl R. West stated, “They didn’t show us the respect to come to our facility to come and communicate with us.” He added, “We brought them here to provide shelter, and now they feel as though they don’t have any shelter.”
