Microsoft wants you to talk to Windows 11 PCs again — Copilot gets 'conversational' input to complement your mouse and keyboard

And Copilot is coming for your Windows 11 Search Bar

Microsoft is pushing to make every Windows 11 PC an AI PC. In new updates, the company is focusing on further integrating AI into Windows 11 apps and experiences (not just chatbots), and making voice as much of an input option as the keyboard and mouse.

The idea, Microsoft says, is that AI on a PC should be easy and natural to interact with in either text or voice; that it should be able to see your screen and information and help; and that it should be able, with your permission, to "take action on your behalf."

"Voice will become the third input mechanism to using your PC," Microsoft executive vice president and consumer chief marketing officer Yusf Mehdi said on a call with reporters ahead of the announcement. He mentioned that the idea is for talking to be additive, not replacing keyboards and mice altogether. Mehdi authored a blog post on the new features.

On the Mac, one can turn off Siri and AI.
I have both completely off.

Will that work the same way on Windows?

Linux?
On the computer, I want things to be easy and fun...

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Already, AI popups are getting in the way of getting work done.

I hate that.

If I talk to Windows 11, it will become proficient in my third language: profanity.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Define “easy and fun.”  In the meantime, you can download a copy of mint Linux, follow the instructions to create a bootable thumb drive, and then take it for a spin without interrupting your currently installed OS.

In the days of Intel Macs, one could do this. I even tried it once or twice.
I couldn't see any advantages in Linux vis-a-vis the Mac experience.

Since Apple moved to their own "Apple Silicon" chip design, doesn't work any more.

Oh well. One of the “benefits” of being locked into a particular ecosystem.

Don’t expect you to take my word for it, but it’s been my experience that Linux such as Mint is just as easy and seamless to use as Windows, with a smaller footprint and generally faster performance in many areas such as updates.  A Linux install can do a fundamental upgrade - one major version to the next -  faster than many Windows updates take.

EDIT: there is one Linux project that is specifically intended to run on new Apple processors.  It’s called Asahi Linux.  Since I don’t have an Apple, I can’t say anything meaningful about its ease of use, but they have a website under that name so you could look it up and give it a try.

Look I like Linux but they have their own fanboys that are about as annoying as anything else in computing. :D

For me, for copilot, i find it useless, so I just unpinned it and basically ignore it. ChatGPT satisfies all my AI needs. With MS, you become used to the various initiatives that MS tries to shove down your throat. Everything sucks I guess.

Linux fanbois are, if anything, more annoying than windows fanbois.

Ubuntu IMO does delivery a Windows/MACos like experience, plug and play, etc. That's for better and for worse too. Which is why a lot of people don't like Ubuntu. Ubuntu server is my goto (gopbr runs on US i believe). Just a good, solid system.

I won't use it.  The Government is already listening to the thoughts in my head.

I wonder if it has a filter for Boston accents.

YES. I am just shy of proficient in Linux. Probably a high Super-user.

Networking kept me from switching before. Now it's interoperability.
Apple has that in spades.
Windows/Droid ain't bad.

Linux - Dunno. Can it talk to Droids, I'd guess?
That'll prolly be my next exploration wrt Nix.

Since android is based on Linux, I would hazard a guess that they can talk to each other quite nicely.

Sure - But whether the softs have been written is the thing. All my smart stuff is in Google Home for instance... Right now I can handle that from any droid, or from my Windows boxen via chrome, or from various smart speakers throughout my house, or from my bloody TV. I wonder if Mint can handle that... or Samsung stuff for my watch and phone...

There is a lot to consider.

If you have a spare box, or don’t mind running from a bootable thumb drive, take it for a spin and see what it does.

YUP. Very probably my next research venture into *.nix will be with that in mind. But for now, it all works together, so changing paradigms just for the hell of it, well not too likely. Not till it's all pounded out on research and tested IRL... THEN mebbe so.
