U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) blamed the ongoing government shutdown on Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) before criticizing President Donald Trump’s economic policies in an interview with CNN on Thursday.
“I’ve been vocal saying, you know, you can use the nuclear option in the Senate. This doesn’t have to be a shutdown, but what we have to do is we have to work for the American people. And our country is so divided right now. We see it all the time in every single way. It’s divided in what I would say very dangerous ways,” the congresswoman said. “And we saw that with the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk, which has upset so many people across the board.”
Greene went on to endorse the Democratic Party’s shutdown demands, which mainly hinge on an extension of Obama-era Affordable Care Act (ACA) premiums that are set to expire. Republicans in the House passed a “clean” spending bill that would fund the government through late November, while Democrats have held out for ACA tax credit extensions, as well as billions of dollars in additional spending on legislative items like taxpayer-funded healthcare for non-citizens, among other things.
