Senate GOP resists 'nuclear option' as Dem shutdown standoff deepens
GOP fails 6 times to pass continuing resolution as only 3 Democrats cross aisle
By Alex Miller Fox News
Published October 9, 2025 8:50am EDT

Senate Republicans aren’t ready to go "nuclear" again to change the rules around the Senate filibuster as Senate Democrats dig deeper against the GOP’s push to reopen the government.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and Republicans need at least eight Democrats to cross the aisle and vote for their continuing resolution (CR) to pass through the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold.

But only three Democratic caucus members have joined Republicans after six failed attempts to pass the short-term funding extension as the shutdown enters its second week.

Republicans have already turned to the "nuclear option" to unilaterally change the rules this year to blast through Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Democrats’ blockade of President Donald Trump’s nominees. But for many, the notion of changing the rules and nuking the filibuster is a third rail.

No need to.  We want it clear that it is the democrats who are keeping the government shut down, so don’t use the nuclear option.

:amen: Republicans need to keep screaming it, from the rooftops it necessary, that the Dems want free healthcare for illegals. Not for veterans, not for our citizens, but people that are criminals committing atrocious crimes.

Let the Dems twist in the wind.

During the shutdown, Schumer can learn how to properly grill a cheeseburger.

I believe it IS time to "go nuclear".

Perhaps not "all the way".
But the rules must be changed in order to require bills that are necessary to keep the government in operation to "get past the filibuster" obstacle.

Not certain as to how this should be implemented.

Perhaps the opposition should be permitted a limited number of "full up/down votes" on the bill in question before the filibuster rules "expire". After those votes have been held, a "final debate" will be held, after which there will be a binding vote.

As the country becomes increasingly divided, the Senate will become deadlocked so long as the current Seanate rules remains in place.

It's time to change them.
Yes, it involves risk.
No pain... no gain.

Change the rules...

Agreed.  And the longer the government stays shut down, the bigger the win for the GOP.  Maybe by Christmas, the people will learn that we don't need Big Government after all.  The biggest disaster so far for the Democrats is that the government is shut down, yet no one noticed.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

9 days in and I am still Marked safe from any affects from the Schumer Shutdown.

Well I feel sorry for the troops...they live paycheck to paycheck and won't get paid on the 15th...During the Clinton/Gingrich 35 day impasse we were told to apply for food stamps, luckily we didn't have to.

We all know the Democommies are in serious trouble.  They know it too, but they are utterly clueless on what to do about it.

I have a suggestion.  First, is problem definition.

Problem:  The Dems are led by Sen. Schumer in the Senate and Rep Hakeem Jeffries in the House of Representatives.  What do these two clowns have in common?  They are both lawyers by education.  So, what  is the problem with that?  Well, my life experience says they are clueless about most things.  They tend not to comprehend things beyond their own nose.  No Joke.  And all the lawyers I ever knew, they were NEVER problem solvers.  They were problem creators.

Solution:  Find a person in the Senate and one in the House to represent the Dems in negotiating with the Republicans that are not lawyers.  I am certain all existing issues would be resolved in 48 hours.

But with Sen Schumer and Rep Hakeem Jeffries at the helm, the Dems are lost in the desert, and they are clueless what direction to head in.
