Trump admin asks Supreme Court to strike race-based redistricting
« on: September 25, 2025, 02:52:33 pm »
The Trump administration, via the Justice Department, has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn race-based redistricting in a case involving Louisiana’s congressional map. The case questions the constitutionality of Louisiana creating a second black-majority district, done to comply with an earlier court ruling. The DOJ argues that this redistricting amounts to unconstitutional racial gerrymandering and urges the court to overturn the 1986 Thornburg v. gingles decision, which currently guides legal standards for challenges under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

The Supreme Court is set to hear rearguments in *Louisiana v. Callais* in October 2024. The central issue is whether the intentional creation of a second majority-minority congressional district violates the Fourteenth or Fifteenth Amendments. Louisiana’s legislature initially passed a map with one black-majority district, but following lawsuits, added a second, sparking new legal challenges.

Good.  Let’s hope the Court has the courage to remove one more scourge of racism from its precedents.

This is a big one.
It will (rightfully) rip much of the guts right out of the Civil Rights Act.
That is a GOOD thing.

IF the Court sides with Mr. Trump, we must consider that there will be unforseen consequences.

It will further increase the drive amongst the blue states to eliminate Republican Congressional districts as much as possible, and conversely result in the red states eliminating "blue" districts within their boundaries...

Lucky for us most of them are maxed out. Now if the Red states take up the torch, especially if we win this case, I think the GOP would be like a +25 if I read it right.
