A soldier sentenced to life in prison for attacking women in their rooms at Fort Hood was found dead in his cell last week at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the Army said. Sgt. Greville Clarke, 32, is the first inmate to die at the military’s only maximum security prison since 2019, said Maj. Travis Shaw, an Army spokesman. He was found unresponsive in his cell Friday. “Fort Leavenworth Fire and EMS were unable to resuscitate him, and he was pronounced deceased,” Shaw said. An investigation into Clarke’s death is ongoing with the Army Criminal Investigation Division, which investigates all soldier deaths. The Army did not provide a preliminary cause of death. Clarke was convicted in April of more than two dozen crimes including attempted premeditated murder, rape and kidnapping for his attacks on women in the barracks that stretched over 18 months between 2021 and October 2022. He did not attend his own court-martial and spent that time under constant surveillance by Bell County Jail staff out of concern he would try to harm himself, according to information presented in court.
