Illegal Immigrant Charged in Alleged Maryland Murder
Hugo Rene Hernandez-Mendez, a Guatemalan national, has been charged with first- and second-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Da’Cara Thompson in Bowie, Maryland. The case has intensified debates over immigration enforcement, as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) criticized Prince George’s County for allegedly failing to honor an ICE detainer issued after Hernandez-Mendez’s prior DUI arrest.
County officials defended their policies, asserting compliance with legal protocols. In a recent development, prosecutors have requested an expedited autopsy to clarify the cause of Thompson’s death, while Hernandez-Mendez remains detained without bail pending further investigation.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured Thompson entering a vehicle driven by Hernandez-Mendez in Hyattsville before the pair arrived at a residence in Bowie. A search of the property by Prince George’s County Police uncovered blood, a missing fingernail, hair, and other evidence linked to the victim, with the medical examiner’s report still pending.
Authorities are working to determine whether Thompson and Hernandez-Mendez were acquainted prior to her disappearance. Police records and video evidence confirmed Thompson’s interaction with the driver before entering the vehicle that traveled to the Bowie home.
