White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called for the firing and investigation of those responsible for a stalled escalator that carried President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump at Tuesday’s United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The escalator malfunction occurred before Trump addressed the General Assembly in New York.

He and the first lady were forced to walk up the stalled escalator.

"If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately," Leavitt posted on X.

A United Nations spokesperson later told Fox News that someone from the U.S. delegation or security detail ran up the escalator and then back down again before the Trumps were off the escalator. The act of running down the up-moving escalator triggered an alarm, halting it.

"We understand it was someone from the President's party who ran ahead of the president and inadvertently triggered the stop mechanism," said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres.

The U.N. added that there was nothing nefarious about what happened.

Fox News Digital reached out to the U.N. and the U.S. Secret Service. The White House referred Fox News Digital to Leavitt's post on X.

An eagle-eyed Karoline Leavitt produced evidence of what may have been a prank played on President Donald Trump during his arrival at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

Trump and First Lady Melania were on their way to the floor of the 80th General Assembly, where the president was prepared to deliver scorching remarks about the state of U.N. spending on illegal immigrants, when an escalator he was on abruptly turned off.

The president briefly looked around as camera shutters snapped before climbing the frozen staircase.

But a Sunday report from the Hindustan Times casts doubt on whether the technical difficulty was genuine or manufactured, Leavitt asserted on social media.

She pointed to a paragraph deep in the story:

“Meanwhile, UN organisers have been joking about stunts they could pull to highlight the funding shortage. One idea doing the rounds: turn off the escalators and elevators and simply tell him they ran out of money, so he has to walk up the stairs.”

“If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately,” Leavitt thundered.

U.N. Claims Videographer May Have Halted Escalator as President Trump, First Lady Approached

The United Nations claims that a videographer may have accidentally been responsible for the abrupt escalator shutdown on Wednesday when President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump arrived for the General Assembly in New York City.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News she believes the president was sabotaged, and emphasized the Secret Service is “looking into” the matter.

The U.N. has claimed the escalator stoppage was not a deliberate act. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric claimed a videographer with the U.S. delegation could have accidentally triggered a safety feature at the top of the escalator, causing it to stop running, as London’s Times reported:

    A subsequent investigation, including a readout of the machine’s central processing unit, indicated that the escalator had stopped after a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was triggered at the top of the escalator. The safety mechanism is designed to prevent people or objects accidentally being caught and stuck in or pulled into the gearing. The videographer may have inadvertently triggered the safety function described above.

On Tuesday afternoon, Leavitt notably shared a screenshot from a Sunday Times article published last weekend about how U.N. staffers reportedly mused about sabotaging the escalator for the president’s arrival.
