Trump Says NATO Countries Should Down Russian Aircraft that Enter Their Airspace During Meeting with Zelensky

President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky participated in a bilateral meeting and press conference on Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly, where Trump told reporters that NATO countries should shoot down Russian aircraft that enter their airspace.

Zelensky and Trump met privately for about one hour after talking to reporters ahead of their meeting, according to the White House press pool.

One reporter asked Trump if he thinks “NATO countries should shoot down Russian aircraft if they enter their airspace?” to which Trump responded, “Yes, I do.’

Later in the press conference, another reporter followed up, asking if the United States would support NATO allies in such a scenario.

“Depends on the circumstances, but we’re very strong toward NATO. NATO has stepped up, he said, noting that member countries have upped their defense contributions from two percent to five percent of their GDP. “Trillions of dollars is being pumped in, and they’re paying us for the weapons that we sent.”

Trump also noted that the “Russian economy is terrible right now” when asked about progress he has made in bringing a close to the war. Last month, Trump notably placed a 25 percent tariff on India, on top of an existing 25 percent tariff, in response to purchases of Russian oil.

“Well, the biggest progress is that the Russian economy is terrible right now, as you know. It’s crashing, and that, frankly, Ukraine is doing a very good job of stopping this very large army. It’s pretty amazing. You know, this is a war that should have ended in three days, four days,” he said.

“People said it was going to be very quick, and you got to hand it to the Ukrainian soldiers and everybody involved. It’s still going on. And that’s not a good thing for Russia,” he continued, adding Russia does not “look very distinguished” after  “three and a half years of very hard fighting.”

Moments after the meeting, Trump wrote in a bombshell Truth Social post that he believes Ukraine “is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form” with the support of the European Union.

After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form. With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option. Why not? Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win. This is not distinguishing Russia. In fact, it is very much making them look like “a paper tiger.” When the people living in Moscow, and all of the Great Cities, Towns, and Districts all throughout Russia, find out what is really going on with this War, the fact that it’s almost impossible for them to get Gasoline through the long lines that are being formed, and all of the other things that are taking place in their War Economy, where most of their money is being spent on fighting Ukraine, which has Great Spirit, and only getting better, Ukraine would be able to take back their Country in its original form and, who knows, maybe even go further than that! Putin and Russia are in BIG Economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act. In any event, I wish both Countries well. We will continue to supply weapons to NATO for NATO to do what they want with them. Good luck to all!

Russia periodically flies into US air space, and we do nothing.  I think President Trump is encouraging a policy that would open the door for Russia to counter attack.

Time is Russia's enemy.  As the Europeans slowly grind their way to shutting off Russia, Russia will continue to fall, and fail.  There were those that predicted an economic collapse in Russia to occur in the Fall of this year, but I do not see that happening.  The Russian people, subjects of totalitarianism, grin and bare the hardships that come with life in Russia.  They do so because they have no choice.  Speak up and you get a bullet, or you disappear.

President Trump needs to end this nonsense of referring to Putin as 'his friend'.  Putin is a friend to no man.  President Trump needs to up the game in terms of weapons provided to Ukraine, and seriously enable them to destroy Russia as best they can, particularly in the Moscow metro area.  Starve and freeze them this winter, and there is a slight chance of the people rising up.

Pardon my correction. The Russians regularly fly into our air defense identification zones (ADIZ). And we do nothing other than observe them because they are in international air space.

Actual Russian incursions into US airspace are very, very rare.
